SENTENCE IN AUBURN RIME WHICH COMMITTED. PRISON CONVICTED OF A CI ANOTHER CONFESSES HAVING Illustrations > sometimes The Rochester Union says: — of the fact that innocent men are tried and convicted of crimes with which they had no. connection come to light oceasionally. A case of this kind of more than ordinary interest came to the know- ledge of a reporter of the Union this morn- ing. In 1882 the Manufacturers’ and Traders’ Bank of Buffalo was made the victim of a fraudulent transaction to the extent of over $2,000. A man giving the name of Watson opened an account at the bank and made a deposit, from which he drew small sums. When the original de- posit was nearly exhausted he placed to his credit a New York draft made by the Bank of Commerce of Cleveland for $3,000. The day after he checked out $2,100. The draft was sent on to New York and was honored without question, but when it eame back to the Bank of Commerce there was trouble. The draft had originally been made out for S17, but had been skilfully raised to $3,000. An investigation resuit- ed in the & SUSpX ~cted party in| Buffalo who, under the name of Watson, was tried, convicted and sentenced Auburn for tive years, which term he is at present serving. He was, itis said, duly identified by the ek officials, and all the evidence was strong as inst him. Meanwhile an apparently inno- cent tan is confined in prison, and it seems as if steps shonll he taken by the proper authorities to secure his release. Immediately after Edwards’ confession, Mr. faylor wrote to the Dis- trict Attorney of Erie County in relation to the sume and suggested the “Watson,” but nothing as yet has been done. om? reicase of ee Revenue and Taxationin Montrea? The very large ‘necrease in the receipts oi the city treasury for 1886 over 1885 the Montreal Gazette—is a gratifying evi- denve at once of the steady growth of Montreal, aud the healthy financial dition of its population. LETTERS TO Tih EDITOR, > The Georgetown Pilots Sir,—In the issue of the Herald of the ist inst,. appears a communication from Ronald S. Molbonald, Harbor Master,Grand River, who seems to be anxious to bring himself into public notice by casting re- tlections on the Georgetown pilots. As the article im «question was evidently written not so much ty sustain the reputation of Grand River us a harbor, as to give ,u’- licity to the jealousy arising from the sue- cess which hitherto attended the George- town pilots in the many instances in which they have taken vessels in and out of Grand River. True, the accident to the George Herold was one which might be averted, but if a :istake should be made by one man, it does not necessarily follow that a number of others are to be blamed as weil. and should the intelligent Harbor Master of Grand fiver, as is his duty, desire to avoid further accidents, 1 would suggest that he have the buoys in the proper piaces, es- pecially at this season, when vesse!s are passing iu and out every day and accidents are likely te cecur ; ; and should he req ire any information in the placing of the bueys there are pilots in Georgetown, who can teach him not only to put. the buoys in their proper places, but to pilot a vessel in or out afterwards. The writer of the Hera’é says also that Georgetown pilots are injuring the ship ping interests of Grand River by thew ig- norance and ineoinpeteney in_ piloting but ans injury lone has been done pally 15 their ow for, i Hearty all cases Where piloting large schooners has to treorgetownh pucts, geiiicl e ;} . uu puots, he done, it is a nv thout the aid of the harbor masters tu u ' Bank transaction.
