HARNESS HORSE RACING islanders love harness horse racing and Old Home Week provides thrills aplenty in this great and popular sport. Always a major attrac- tion this year's week-long program bids fair to top all previous records both from the standpoint of entries and competition offered. There will be six nights and three, possibly four, afternoons of rac- ing. Some of the highlights will be: MONDAY NIGHT--FREE-FOR-"ALL PACE AND 2:25 PACE one or more divisions. TUESDAY NIGHT--2:I9 TROT THURSDAY AFTERNOON-FREE-FOR-ALL PACE FRIDAY NIGHT--FREE-FOR-ALL TROT Outstanding horses including, Free-For-Allers not entered in pub- lished list will be given an opportunity to race in overnight events, weather permitting. The track at. the Charlottetown Driving Park is lightning fast and iecords have been toppling with some of the fastest miles in the Mari- times being recorded. Climaxing as it does the horse racing season in these seaside prov- inces. Charlottetown will be the mecca for racing enthusiasts from near and far Old Home Week. Dubbed "The Coliseum" the major part of the con- struction will be finished by Old Home Week, but the interior will re- quire some additional time. in this building will be exhibits and Judging Ring. It will be a big asset to both public and judges when viewing the popular Live Stock entries. Filling in long felt want it should prove one of the most popular guildindgs on the ground situated prominently in the midst of the Fair roun s. The seating capacity will be limited this year, but nevertheless it affords those interested good -advantage points in viewing the judging of animals. A variety of acts will feature the vaudeville. Includ- ed in the program will be Sonny Moore and his dog act, Heerdink Trio of acrobatics and another high ranking per- formancc from the Lynch Show. 4 Here are reviews of some of the other attractions:- COUNT ERNESTO This year's grandstand program will be enlivened by one of the greatest comedy acts ever to appear before a local audience. This is Ernie Wisweli, better known as ”Count Ernesto and his Funny Ford." " In the years he has been building zany devices into what was originally an ancient Ford touring car, Ernie has come up with some fantastic gimmicks, many of which he has patented. According to information received from George A. llamid & Son, noted hooking agency for outdoor attractions, Wiswcll's "Dizzy Lizzie" sprays fountains of water from its radizitor cap. explodes at both ends and underneath. blows its hood into the air. emits billows of smoke and flames. rears and bucks like a bronco and finally chases its ”trainer" around the track. apparently steering itself. Twenty years of constantly testing gags for laugh- value before live ziudiciiccs have produced Ernie Wiswe1i's masterpiece of SCl'CWI)iiII mechanics. MIA & MATTI Mia and Matti are a team who will bend over back- ward. and also frontward, to please an audience. That is to say they are an outstanding team of acro- batic contortionists and you will have an opportunity to see them during Old Home Week at the Provincial Ex- hibition. Their act is unique in that it combines advanced acro- batic routines with both hack- and front-bending contor- tion. Not, infrequently contortionists are a bit lacking in muscular development, but these versatile young Finns, through their varied repertoire, have physiques of pleas- ing and symmetrical proportions. Mia and Matti have now been performing together for over five years. 'lt began when Mia was doing professional ballet work at the Rcvuo Theatre in Helsinki and a young man named Matti lfunnoncn was doing a solo acrobatic turn there. The producer at the theatre suggested that they practise together, since he knew that Mia was al- ready a coniortionist as well as a ballet dancer. Since that time they have exhibited "throughout Fin- land, Norway, Sweden, Denmark. Germany. Switzerland, Holland and England. They have given command per- formances for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth as well as for the late King of Sweden and the King of Den- mark. ”Our most unusual performance," Matti recalls. "was given at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City during the Miss America parade of 1030. At that time we had to go through our act. on top of a cage of lions, while the cage was moving along in the-procession.” A. ROBINS - THE BANANA MAN " ti Audiences in the grandstand at the Provincial Exhibi- tion have a treat in store for them Old Home Week. One of the greatest novelty acts of all time-A. Robins, the Banana Man-has been secured. One of the few remaining acts in show business that makes extensive use of comedy props, the astounding Rob- ins comes on stage wearing a baggy coat. From it he pro- ceeds to take musical instruments, furniture, endless quanti- ties of bananas and even water melons, until the stage is loaded with objects, all drawn from the magical coat. Rob- ins neither speaks nor does a silent actahis one remark, delivered in a comical falsetto, is "Wow!" as each new object produced seems to astonlsh him even more than it does the audience. When the act started, back in the great days of vaude- ville, only musical instruments were produced, the per- former imitating their sounds with his mouth. This feat- ure of the act was kept as an opener but with the years more and more props have been added until the act reach- ed its present. proportions. AUGUST 9 To 14 LIVE STOCI. Live Stock enthusiasts will really have something to "oh" and "ab" about in this year's exhibits. Without doubt they are representative of the finest specimens in the Province. Many new breeders are showing and judges will have a difficult time in deciding the "best of the show.” The judging always attracts keen interest and it's a sure bet this year that the Coliseum where judging takes place will be crowded to see the cream of Island Live Stock on parade. Onceiagain we take pride in the fact that our encouragement coupled with that of the Dominion and Provincial Governments, has brought our standard of quality so high that we are known through- out the length and breadth of the American continent as among the best producers of special types of Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Swine and Poultry. We want everyone to take an interest and lend encouragement to this very important side of our Old Home Week program. Our exhib- itors arc in no small way contributing to the prosperity of the Garden of the Gulf.
