Norton.-Our customers are kindly re- quested to use as few lights as they can conveniently get along with during Wed- nesday. Thursday and Friday evenings of this week. This is necessary owing to changes being made in the steam plant. Otherwise the service is liable to interrup- tion during above days, Summerside Electric Light, Ltd. 4 3i ' As the result of two fatal accidents happening at Railway wharf within two mouths besides several narrow escapes from death all because of defects in con- nection with this piece of Government property the citizens of Summerside are loud in their condemnation of the present system of providing for public tradlc. andthe Railway yard were other than “mantraps"but as they are now with such an iucreasein trams the name is quite applicable. The system-if it can be term- ed such-ls entirely wrong and until many improvements are made the wharf will continuetobedreaded by the tra- velling public. There must be a decided change made and that immediately or the lives of every one who has occasion to pass thereby will be in great danger.. It is aregrettable thing to have such con- ditions existing and too strong a claim can not be presented to the Government fora better etatel of aifairs. “Who’ll be next?" Many ask and pauss and shudder, tothink of what might be before us. Little do we know whose brother, sister, father or mother might by some over- sight perhaps on his or her part step in cautiously into one of the dangers which lie on every hand. The conditions should be such that no one could, unless inten- tionally iniure his or her person; and these conditions can be brought about if demandsare made in the proper way to the powers that be. There has as yet, been no special blame attached to the _ railway for either of the fatalities before mentioned but the cause for complaint lies in the fast that there is at present no way of guarding against similar accidents. The trafiic is pouring this way and something mast be done to alleviate the dimculties in con- nection with bettering the uc .mmodatiou and who would dare raise his voice against or in any manner stand in the way of having the great danger removed. It is not only Summerside which is interested in this manner but the whole province as well as many other parts of the Dominion, for this is the chief centre of connection between the Island and the outside world and foreigners are prob ably in more danger than those who knew the wharf Both a foreigner and Summerslder have lost their lives and in neither case was it suicide. Then can they themselves be blamed? There is surely something radically wrong. It is hoped that the Boards of Trade of this Province will work together in this common cause and let us have a lm di ig place which will not en- d dger li esor drive from our shores, those who would spend the s tmmers in the Garden of the Gulf. Much has been said on the question for many years and little done in the way of improvements.
