PdnthorsIAro Mating Much as We hate to admit it Panther Hockey Playoffs hopes went out the window this past weekend as we lost two tough games. We ended last week's remarks by saying that Panther Hockey is not for those with weak hearts & we can add to that/by ob-' serving that if they don't give you heart failure they'll give you heartbreak. St. F.X.—7, U.P.E.I.—5 for a short time it was unbelievable...Panther Power was on the march in the early moments of this game as Wayne Bern— ard opened the scoring at the 0.59 mark on a pass from Lennie Kelly ... then Lorne Carmichael from Gerry McCarron at 1.36 and Rav Dunn from Looie Doherty & Carl Trainor at 2.06 and with only two minutes gone we led 3-0 at this point....we felt a bit sorry for Fred Cubilier in'X net a he lOokedg" ....but the basketball Pantherettes Ibo behind him three times & had only one save. Then the roof fell in on the Panthers & only six minutes later we trailed 4—3 as Cubilier shut the door & the X forwards went to work. In the second period we outshot X by 15-9 but they got the only goal. The Panthers never give up & McCarron scored at the 6.00 minute mark & Lorne Carmichael tied it up at 10.14. The overtime ‘followed the usual script as we lostkourgfourth over— time game.‘ Just as we remarked to our neigh- bour that we feared the opening minute X—man Bob Stephenson, with two of his linemen, got in alone on Art McGuigan & gave hf: no chance as he rapped in the winner at 0.56...the 7th X goal was anticlimatic-& came at 4.41. we felt robbed as we outshOOt X 51-35 but, as we have observed before} the S.0.G.'s is «Photo Evaita Jackson k good for a playoff position. as important a statistic as the number of left handed spectators in the rink. They only count the number of times the puck goes into the net when they make up the Won/lost figures. Of U.P.E.I. we liked the play of Carmichael, Mc- Carron & Bernard in that order. S.M.U. 6—U.P.E.I. -4. The boys really wanted to win this one but, much as we'd like to beat/them, we must admit S.M.U. has class. They also have several Islanders who 7 contributed greatly to .their win. They got a Shorthanded goal from D'Arcy Murphy & one from Billy Doherty (who also scored the insurance goal) and Grady & Van Deist played strong games. Our scorers-were, Lennie Kelly with two, Louie Doherty, & Wayne Bernard. Once again we out shot; ‘the opposition 47-42. We liked Kelly, Machan &‘ Bernard. Basketball Panther— .Photo by Gordon Pierce ettes split two games this past week making very good showings. They lost a squeekerto X 64-60 in a game in which Janet Train~ or & Rose King scored 16 points each. They then overwhelmed Acadia 49-25 in a contest in which the same two girls each racked up 12 points. It would appear that the girls will probably make the playoffs & we think they deserve much credit. They are all young, and next year will be strong contenders. Mount A. 103 U.P.E.I. 34. In basketball we hear wild reports from this .game in Sackville. It would appear. from what we are told that_5'6",‘ 150 lb. I'Mike Connolf-yw our main ballcarrier, was badgered into fist; cuffs at the two minute mark of the game & was, along with a Mt. A player, of similar size,.banished from the court. The trouble started during the warm—up. Our boys led at the half but ran up a good lead. We still ghave an excellent chance of reaching the playoffs. We are told about 100 fansjourneyedover to cheer on their faVorites. Hockey action this week will see Mount A. here on Wednesday night at 8.00 and St. Thomas next Sunday at 2.00. The men's basketball team will be at U.N.B. for two important games on Friday & Saturday and the Panth- erettes will play hostess] to S.M.U. at 2.00 ‘
