I was not lacking in friends when I made these trips to Ottawa, which my critic‘ have been disposed to call ‘picnics’. If there were any ‘picnics’ they were ones which paid this province well in- deed, brcause we never went back without obtaining something for this province." (Applause). “Look over the record. Yet when we were building it, when we were going to Ottawa fighting to get money, what was being said about it by our Liberal friends? ‘Another of MacMillans extravag- ances‘ that was going to ruin the Province. To than two gentlemen the whole credit goes. For years that part of the country had been ciamourlng for a rail- way, and you must admire the abil- ity of those men who were to pres- ent an. alternative scheme and convince the Dominion Govern- ment to give those people some- thing that would be a real and lasting benefit. The Bennett Gov- ernment voted $100,000 for that ten mile stretch of highway; in other words they undertook to pay for it completely with the exception of the preparation, the ditching and other incidontals. "How many votu did that set Messrs. McLui-e and Myers on election day? None. The very men who were working on the roads were the men who went to the poll! and voted against us. (Laughter-J “Where therehad been three or four members of the Treasury Board, which is really a committee of the cabinet to do the work of work Mr. Albert Baker, u man whose experience, integrity and fllllllty was of the greatest value in that capacity. And I say it was no credit to the Province when the Liberal Government let Mr. Baker go off that job. He had an eye to everything; every tool was kept un- der lock and key. I wonder what happened afterwards? (Laughter) The work that should have been done in I month dragged on and on. In fact I don't know whether llwy m done yet." (Cries of “Nol") “Of course, we were only repair- ing the building. We were not put- "III in any fiurcy frames; we were m‘ llllylng the most extravagant furnishings and fittings. All that was left to those who are there now. We appropriated $40,000 for work which was deemed necessary and essential. When the Public Ac- counts come out, i! you can figure it up, find out whether they haven't spent another hundred thousand dollars on it. "They will go down in history, they say. as the House that had no Opposition. I suggest that they will go down for other reasans-for proving themselves the most In- competent government this Pro- llle Government. these people are , vincc ever had. They will go down now being paid a salary. In other words, these are the fellows who be- llcve in looking after themselves. (Appiaure). The National Park “Take the National Park. When I first exposed the deal, months ago, and said the Government had committed themselves to a cer- tain proposition, namely, Dalvey, I was met with criticism. Deriials were made, but I persisted. I said more- over that they had passed an or- der-ln-council, What was the re-, suit? The order-in-couucii had to; be printed in the Pioneer. Then‘ the mouthpiece of the Liberal party, the Patriot, came out with it too, and said that if Dr. Mac- Millan had been ‘fair and square‘ he would have indicated that tiierc was a. loop-hole in the order-iri- council. (Laughter). "I am not the type of man who believes in any government pass- ing orders-in-council In which there are loop-holes: bceuusic an order-- in-couneil with a loop hole is nn good! (Applause). "Time goes on; the engineers come down here; and finally come: the f announcement that there is to be l a strip of land coming down and stopping next to Dalvcy. After more family fighting among timse thirty ‘wonders’ in the House, Dal- vcy is included now. Antl if I may venture the prediction, if you ever sec a National Park in this Pro- vince it will be Dalvey and very little else." (Appausc). "But I want to ask you what good is a National Park going to do this Province? The Government must buy the .ite, and where are they going to get the money? Is it_ out of the three million dollars that they voted, and which some people say now has already been spent? The taxpayers of this Pro- vince have to dig down into their pockets to pay for the site of a National Park, because the Fed- eral Government will only trike it over on those terms. Prov. Bid. lwpairs “There was a nice story in cir- culatlon during the campaign by some member of the present Gov- crnment that ‘MECMIUEII was tear- ing down the Provincial Building and rebuilding it in order to pro- vide work for the electors of Char- lottetown, to make his own elec- tion secure.’ That story, ! may say, had a very damaging effect to the Conservative party. Do you think that I have any apology to make for my action in restoring the Provincial building?" (Applause). “We proceeded logically and when the House was in session we ap- pointed a joint committee of the House to investigate the condition of the building. One member of the committee was the late Hon. Mr. Lea, whose death we all re- gret; because when you took him out of that ‘solid thirty’ there wasn't very much left. The present Minister of Public Works was an- other member of the committee. They went over that building from top to cellar and a unanimous re- port was presented to the House, to the effect that the proposed im- provements were absolutely neces- sary to prevent the building from failing down in ruin. "We placed in charge of that as the government that fought like blazes among themselves. Why, you couldn't go through the Square when their caticus was meeting without overbearing the bedlam of i sound; And if you could only see) behind the doors, you would seel one of them opening the ‘door to l an enraged colleague and telling) him he didn't care if he never came back. (Laughter). Unemployment Relic! "Arc- they looklizg after the ones who are in need? Has relief been increased in this province? Is Chur- lottetoivn any better off? Are there any projects of work being done in Charlottetown except what has been forced u-‘cn them by the Mayor and City Council after con- tinual fighting and even making trips to Ottawa in order that (‘hnrioltetown labouring men might be given a chance to eat and live? it that is turned lightly aside by "use who are now in power. “I can‘ say sincerely that during my Premier hip I did everything in my power to do what I thought was in the best interests of this Provircc. He said ‘fWe are only beginning: before we are through the people of Canada will be amazed that there should be so much rottennes in any government in Cniiadaffhat Government, I need nnt tell you, ladies and gentlemen, was a Liberal Government." ' Spelling Disaster “And where 15 the Liberal Gov- eminent. in this province drifting? A party in power without an Op- position spells disa tel‘. They say that is a ‘wonderful’ sit- uatton. It may be ivonderful for them, but it spells disaster to the Interests of Prince Edward Island." (Applause). Continuing, Dr. MacMillan re- called that during the campaigns last year Mr. Peter Sinclair stump- ed the county with hi: “little story nbuot the Sales Tax."
