HASZAR.D’S GAZETTE, DECEMBER 22. '- . HASZARD’S GAZETTE. 4.: Saturday, December 22, 1855. On Tuesday last, we attended by invitation an examination of Mr. Rev.-he's School, and ex- rienoed a bigli gratification at the result. here were present about 120 boys exhibiting all the appearance of good health, and whose proficiency in the various branches in which they were examined, did great credit to both Teacher and Pupils. We were much leased at the thorough manner, in which the knowled e of their mother tongue was imparted ; not on ‘was the meaning of ever word correctly given, but the root, whether atin, Greek, or of any other language correctly stated. We were particular y struck with this last improvement in teaching the English language, it having been unknown in our youthful day. They were well versed in Geography, answering readily any question as to where any particu ar place was situated, as well as the form of govern- ment, productions, &c. There were three he s whose proficiency struck us, as boin remar - able for their age, the oldest not being above fourteen, we should; think these boys exhi- bited nn acquaintance with Mathematical Science, in a way that showed they had been thoroughly grounded in the principles, as well as practice, of the branches they had been taught ; their names were Roche, the son of the Mr. Roche is entitled to high praise for the manner in which he has performed his duties. The number of scholars on the list we are informed, is l47, We had the addi- tional pleasure of visiting the girl,s school in the same building—-the old Catholic Chapel- under the superiiitendence of Miss M‘Donald, ratified at the progress exhibited by them; t ey were with a few ex- ceptions all ver young, but well advanced for Master. We have been requested to say, that the upils at the Central Academy will take place on Monday next, at 11 o’clock, at which it is desirable, that the pa- rents of the scholars. and the friends of educa- tion generally should attend. We do not know to what cause to attribute the real or apparent luke-warmness in the cause of education mani- For our own parts, we know of no ob'ect more gratifying, than a col- lection offine. caltby, intelligent, young people with countenances, whose varied expressions is many a reflection, as to When it is reiuemberod, that these are they, upon whose future conduct the welfare and prosperity of examination of the in Charlottetown . calculated to call u what may be their ate in after-life. the country must, under Providence depend; it is obvious, that no care should he s ared in training them. HASZARD & own.-r. its , The evening of Tuesday the l8tli inst. ador- ded an occasion of much enjoyment to a large party of the good citizens of Charlotte, both adults and children, for it was the evening ap- pointed for the Tea Party, annually given to the children of the Sunday School in connection with St. Paul's Church. A stranger might have found some dilliculty in saying. whether the greater gratilication were felt by the chil- drcn seated at the Tea Tables, or by the specta- tors who had assembled to witness their fes- tivity. At 4 o'clock, the children were arranged at each side, and at the top, of the lnliint School Room, which with dilliculty contained the us- sembled company of feasters and lookers on. Ilis Excellency the Lieut. Gov. entered the Boom soon after 4, and appeared highly pleased with theinteresting view which presented itself, 214 bright faces with happiness strongly mark- ed upon theiii were ranged in dou )l0 rows along an extended space. Tea and Cake were served in abundance to them all by the teach- ers, and, with l'reedoni unrestrained, but with a becoming decorum, all partook very amply of the treat provided. At intervals, the children here encouraged to vary the pleasing features of the occasion, by singing sacred melodies, which they did in a manner to prove that nature had bestowed upon many of them liaruionious voices and that art had not been wanting to teach them how to use nature’s gift. ~ And now, having given three heart Cheers for His Excellency and the Misses aly, and having paid a like compliment to their teachers! oi writing were shown in both schools. The num- ber of pupils in Miss M‘_Donald's list is 76, the 0 those Ladies who had assisted in provid- this entertainment, the children sung grace in acknowledgment of the goodness of Him "from whom all blessings flow,” and began to think ofreturning to their respective homes. At this period of the evening a collection was taken up in aid of the poorer class of chil- dren who might be kept from the School through want of some necessary article of clothin . And His Excellency, (expressing himself highly pleased with what he had witnessed, having I and t ing with his accustomed kindness, very liberal] contributed to the charitable ob'ect repose left the Room, which was soon a ter abandoned by the rest of the company. Thus terminated a happy evening and one which, probably, has lel't a very pleasing im- pression on the minds of many persons. I am, Sirs, Your obedient servant, C. Laovn.
