RAILWAY MILEAGE Our Militia Force. ‘The Newloandland Dificaltics, Etc ten this fore-} Orrawa, March 31. In the House of Commons, Mr. Haggart replying to Mr. Davies said that the amount paid by the I. C. R. for mileage between Halifax and Bt. John was $22,351, and the C. P. RB. paid to the Intercolonial $13,037. Mr. Hughes, of North Victoria, moved for & return respecting the drilling of the active militia annually and other particulara re garding the military force. He advocated a return to the old system, and said that if our militia was not drilled annually it should be disbanded and the money saved. Mr. Bowell said that anything he could do to secure the efficency of the force would be done. As to annual drill, all that was wanted was for Parliament to pass the necessary cost of doing so. Motion passed. Hon. Mr. Davies moved for the co-respondence which took place _ be- tween Canada and Newfoundland on_ the question of the latter coming into the Dom- inion and also as to exchange free of duty of certain products of Canada and New- foundland. In regard to the latter he blamed the Government for not issuing a proclamation enforcing the act passed in 1885 regarding the collection of duty on Newfoundland fish imported into Canada They ought to have collected duty and en- forced the act. Mr. McMillan, of Huron, delivered the speech whictyhe intended to give on the Budget. He advocated direct taxation even if it costs $15 per head. Dr. Sproul and Mr. Landerkin followed. Hon. C. H. Tupper presented correspondence in reference to the difficulties between Canada and Newfoundland covering a period of five years. The correspondence is very bulky and shows clearly that the Dominion Government acted fairly and above board in all steps which were taken. ' —— oe Raiiway Accident. Orvawa, March 31.
