7 7 ; aE A Disgraceful Gallows Scene. [| Special to the Moncton Times. } | Lonpon, Feb, 2'. Details of the attemptto hang Lee make the case the most horrible that ever disgraced the gibbet in England. Lee was perfectly firm, and went to the scaffold undaunted. When the attempt to hang him failed the prisover’s spirit remained unbroken ; he was led trom uader che gallows and walked back to his cell with a firm step and erect bear- | inv. When placed upen the trap, he) stood motionless during preliminary | coremonies, and when the noose wis placed, and the spring about to be | touched, he made an apparent effort to | adjust his bedy to the expected drop. Wen the click of the spring sounded be drew breath as if he was taking his last, butwhen the murderer realized that the gibbet had not done its work he appeared to startastrom a_night- mare. He, bowever, quickly recovered. The machiuery was carefully examined ant woodwork found wet and swollen, so that the spring and trap would not} move quickiy. The machinery was then oied asd net moved until the officials were Convinced it was in perfect condition. Lee was again brought out and stood firmly upon the trap. The machine avaia failed te work, and the victim shuddered. The executioner pounded the frame work and stamped upon the trap, but the trap would not move. Lwe straightened himself and Was 2 secoud time removed to his celi ; his spirit was very mach broken. The third time the machinery was over- hauled and pronounced all right. The murderer was led out ard noosed and back-cupped. The spring was again touched and again it refused to operate. The strain und suspence had now over- taken Lee ; he swooned aud had to be carried away. The Sheriff’s officers were dismayed aud deserted the gal- lows. The Sheriff telegraphed to the Home Secretary for instructions, and, #8 already stated, Lee's sentence has been commuted to life imprisonment. —— More Extracts from Gordon's Letters. London papers continue to publish extracts from telegrams and letters of Geo. Gordon as they appear in the blue book on Egypt. One letter, dated Dec. 4, 1884, recounts many incidents of the sieve, and has the following narratives: “Oace the river rose. We drove off Arabs in four fights. We tired their towns, Wesent two expeditions to Senaar. We had a fight Sept. 5th. We were defeated with beavy loss, our square gettiog always broken. Has been quiet since. We fired 3,000,000 rounds in these different fights. Arab Krupp guns often bulied our steamers, We have lost three steamers and built two. Alithe captives with the Muhbdi are well. Slatin Bey is well treated but is kept in chains. Nuns among the ‘aptives have ostensibly married Greeks in the party in order to save themselves from being obliged to marry Arabs, There is a mysterious Frenchman from Dongola with the Mahdi. Don’t let Ezyptian soldiers come. Take direct command of steamers at Metemmeh and turn out the Fellaheen. Raw Sugar. Says the Montreai Produce Bulletin: After the close of ni vigation last yeur, there was more raw sugar stored in this city than was ever koowo at any ove period previously, aod io fact so large were stocks that they in a great mea- sure contributed to the severe depression and extremely low prices,so recently ex- perienced in the r.tined product. Such, however, hes ben the imm*nse in- crease in cou umption induced by low prices, that there is comparatively little raw left on this market, and quite a pumber of cargoes ot Brazil and West India sugar have already been sold to arrive. During the past week about 1,700 bhde. of J:maics refining on spot were sold at 44¢ perlb., and another rouod lot changed hands on p. t, which cleans out the stocks of two of the largest holders in this city. ——_ 2 = Dr. Cahilis Remains. Oo the 28 h of October, 1864, there died in Boston an Ivish Catholic clergy- man, Rev. Dr. Cahill, who, os a seholar, orator. aod theological controverss ist, oecupied « place in the front rank in Ireland. In his sizty-eighth year, while on a leciuring tour in the United State+, he was provtrated by illness that proved fatal. It has long been felt that Dr. Cabill’s remains should rest io his native lund, and, lately arrangements were made to remove the body to Glas- nevin Ceme‘ery, Dublin. On Satur- day it was taken from Boston to New York, under escort of Irish American societies, and it wili be seat across the oceun in charge of Rev. P. B. Murphy, of the archdiocese of Boston. ——_ «2. ee The Fish Trade. An important feature in the fish trade of Montreal is the growing demand for fresh frozen fish during the cold weather, frozen herriag, smeits and tommy cods being furnished in large quantities ty the ‘rade of the lower provinces during the wioter.
