The Netted Gem - page 7 Ode to Parking Lot A Lament By Robert Bodrog-Goodland Well, I guess it’s official. It may have started out as an ugly rumor, but not it’s con- firmed. In case you haven’t noticed yet, parking lot C is being annihilated in the name of progress to make way for that Atlantic Veterinary College. . It seems rather ironic, doesn’t it? Usually buildings are torn down, soon to be followed by the appearance of parking lots. But no, things are done differently here on the Island. No one can accuse us of doing things by the book. I mean, who cares if parking lot C is an historic landmark? I don’t know about you, but some of my fondest memories of youth have been had in parking lot C. I’ve eaten there, gotten drunk there, I even remember last winter during one " of our worst snow storms I was stranded in lot C for an entire weekend; just me, my Coleman stove and half a pound of bacon. It’s a good thing I had a termos of Gatorade with me, or I would have died of thirst. But I’ve also had some very romantic times in lot C; nestled together under a blanket in my little toyota with‘ that very special lady, CIMN playing harshly in the bacground as we chugged back cheap Italian wine and ate creamy hostess twinkies. (Sigh). These are days forever gone, these are the days that an: no more. But do not despair. Al- though lot C may be gone, according to the construction plans a new parking lot will appear, perhaps by Belvedere Avenue near the former location of that grand old site. And we can find solace during our hour of mourning by knowing that although it may be gone, no one can ever take away our memories of that enchanted place: the broken bottles, the snowball fights, and innocence —— perhaps the loss of it — all experienced in the universe which was parking lot C.
