Rose,Mary arrived home Monday even-
ing having left the ‘_Sehooner in Char-
lottetown. It will be remembered that
Capt. McDonald with a crew of 12 mon
and four prospectors among them bring
the owner .Mr. J. R. Larkin. of Rich-
mond, left Svdney on June the 16th
last with the purpose of visiting certain
‘-parts of Labrador where gold and other
precious minerals were supposed to ex-
ist. For obvious reasons, the location
of the points examined is not given to
the public. The party went northward
to within 170 miles of Cape Chudleigh
at the entrance - to Hudson
are inhabited by Esquimaux
-the only white people being a few
I English and German missionaries. They
know,or pretend to knowmothing of the
existence of minerals, while the mis-
sionaries are very reticevt on the sub-
ject. The latter are supplied with food
and clothing from the various churches
employing them: They buy furs from
the Esquimaux giving in exchange
food, clothing and such other articles of
civilization as can be introduced. The
~ piospectors found such evidences of the
existence oi valuable minerals that a
company has been f rmed with a capital
of $10,000 to continue operations next

potato digging have been the chief ein-
pl yment of farmers for the last two or
three weeks. The results in either case
are not as sati-factory a could be wish-
ed. Much of the late sown oats, althc‘
the growth of straw was good a.re'turn-
ing out extremely poor in grain. The
early sown are good and some extra
heavy yields especially of while cars are
report d. From 'all quarters the report
of the potato crop is very disappointing.
The blight which struck almost every
field in this part of the country has
made the crop a very poor one. A few
fairly good fields are to be seen but for
the most part the tubers are small and
also in many cases a large per.-outage -1
are infectid with a dry black rot. ln
some plices to the writor’s personal
knowledge fully 20 per cent had to left
on the field. With email returns from
the field and very low prices for all'
kinds of farm produce with the single
exceptiqn ol sheep and lambs. the out-
look for the tillers of the soil is not
promising by any means. Actual want
will not of course be felt among the
farming class but for those who have
rash bills to meet (and they are the
majority) the struggle will be harder
than usu ll. -Some very good catches
of codhsh are reported on both east and
west shores of this part of the island
during the last two or ihree weeks. '
The mackerel fishing, however, vh it
used to be such a source of wealth to
our fishermen has. as usual oi late
years, been almost a comple failure.

to be congratulated on the success of
the product of their factory in competi-
r tion at the St. John exhibition, the first
prize for the best cheese having been
awarded to them, also various ~ other
prizes amounting in all to some $80 in
prize money and a gold medal for thi

erend gentlemen and also of our lead-
iiug politicians of both parties. That all
I the English speaking provinces of Cau-
ada have given good majorities on the
side of right is certainly most gratifying
and encouraging. The adverse vote in
Quebec although anticipated. is dis-
couraging and only snows that in the
matter ofsocial progress that Province
is atleast a quarter of a century behind
the age. However the great majority
in all the other provinces is qu te suiii-
cient to justify the prohibitiouisis in
demanding of the government a 'fulfill-
ment of the promise in giving us a fed-
eral prohibitory law even if Quebec for
the time had to be left out.-Quite si
