PIANDS AND ORGANS PLETCHERS Warerooms, House Building, Opera ' Valencia Oranges. *“Few people are probably aware that ft takes over 50,000,000 boxes of or- anges to supply the annual deman‘ for this fruit in the United States.’’ said a wholesale fruit merchant in New York. ‘* About 90 per cent of the fruit is grown in California and Florida, and the rest comes principally from Valencia. The domestic fruit is now selling at frox $2.75 to 34 a box, while the foreign ar- ticle is worth from $5 to $7 per crate. ‘‘One reason why we import so many Spanish oranges is owing to the large yearly exports of our own luscious prod- uct to London, where our fruis finds a repdy raarket and is considered a great luxury. Besides there are many Ameri- cans who have cultivated a taste for the fine Valencia fruit, and they will ap- parently have nothing else. So to please both English aud American consumers we export and import large quantities of oranges. ‘*Valencia exports more oranges than any other city in the world. It largely supplies England, sending there annual- ly some 40,000,000, in boxes holding 500 each. The country in the neighbor- hood of the city is flat and has some- thing of the aspect of a market garden. All semitropical fruits grow there, and raisin and wine grapes, rice and mul- berry trees flourish especially. But the growing of oranges for exportation is the chief industry. So great is the for- eign demand for the fruit that when I was in Valencia in the harvest season of 1896 I fonnd it next to impossible to buy a first rate orange, the best being packed for shipment. Those commonly eaten by the inhabitants are the small mandarins. Last year seme 400,000 boxes of ‘‘ Valeucias’’ came to America, and the call for them was brisk. This year at least 450,000 boxes are expected to arrive in New York, and the demand for the fruit in most of the big cities will doubtless be very active during the holidays. ’’— Washington Star. A High Ball. The recent coup of the Princess de Sagan in Paris has created much smil- ing comment. She isa well known iead- er in the fashionable world and for 22 years she and her husband have lived apart. Receutly she succeeded in carry- ill and he is now under her recoftree, and it is announced a reconciliation has taken place. Her eldest son, who al- ways sided with his father, is furious, and his mother will not let him see his father more than once a week, and no one knows whether the old prince is staying at his wife's house of his free will or because he is locked in. An amusing story is told about the condi- tions under which the prince attended a ball given by his wife to royalty in 1878. It was impossible to entertain royalty without the presence of the mas- ter of the house, and the princess sent % friend to intercede with her husband. The prince at the ‘ime happened to bea bit short of money and hardly waited for the friend to make explanation be- fore he responded: ‘‘Certainly, I'll come with great pleasure—for $20,000." He got the money and was at the ball. —Cleveland Plain Dealer. What the Stars Foretell. Londen Answers says: ‘‘Zadkiel, whose almanac for 1898 has just been issued, does not prophesy smooth things for the coming year. April, 1898, prom- ises to be a decidedly exciting mouth. The United States will then enter upon an adventurons foreign policy, apparent- ly directed against Canada. At the end of the month ‘an awkward imbroglio’ awaits our government, which, howev- er, will extricate itself somehow, only to have to contend against opponents both powerful and persistently hostile. ‘‘In October foreign affairs will again look unpromising. An emeute in Egypt or the Sudan is predicted, and yet more fighting on the borders of India. Almost ing him off from his club while be was | A Grest Smoke. A eertleman well known in turf circles made a curious wager in the year 1560, in which he backed himself to smoke one pound weight of strong foreign regalias within 12 hours. The conditions were that the cigars should be smoked one ait a time to within an inch of the end, the backer of time, as in the case of some pi- geon matches, finding the weeds. The match was decided on a Thames steamer plying between London and Chel- sea, the smoker taking up a position well forward in the bews, where he caught the forre of all the breeze that was blowing. re cigars ran 100 to the pound, so that about eight an hour had to be consumed to win the wager. A start was made at 10 o’clock in the morning, and the affair was finished shortly after 7 in the evening. In the course of 9 hours and 20 minutes 86 cigars were fairly smoked, the greatest number consumed being in the second hour, when the smoker disposed of no few- er than 16. At the eighty-sixth cigar, when 14 only remained to be smoked, the backer of time gave in, finding that the smoker was certain to win, and the latter puifed the remainder away at his leisure in the course of the same evening.—-Strand Magazine. Sleeplessness, Sleeplessness brought about by nervous excitement, mental strain or overwork can be cured by a harmless home remedy, which anybody can easily test. Simply take a moist towel, fold it up and place it acxoss the neck. For sleeplessness of nerv- ous people who suffer from cold feet while the head is hot there is no better remedy than to rub the legs, anc particu- larly the feet, briskly with a brush ora rough towel. This will benefit the circu- lation, and a sort of tired feeling is the result, which soon produces sleep. Drugs ¢annot be used successfully for either of these forms of sleeplessness, while the lo- cal application of water will almost unex- ceptionally give immediate relief.—Phila- delphia Ledger. eee London Streets. If any one were to undertake to walk, one way only, through all the streets of London, he would be obliged to go a dis- tance of 2,600 miles, or as far as it is across the American continent from New York to San Francisco. This will give an idea of the distance one will have to go to see thoroughly even the greater part of the city of London—tbe largest city in the world.
