A few montis later saw a great change, not only a gen- eral revival in the business industries oi the country, in which the fishing interest came in for a share, but in a much im- proved catch and quality of the leading staples of the trade, the general business contimiing active weeks later than usual, as well as faverable weather in which to continue the catch long after the cus tomary time of hauling up. Were it not for tha sad record with which the season opened, the year would be remem- bered asa fairly prosperous one. Under brighter and more prosperous conditions, with ruuch more encouragement for the future than jor several years past, the season of 1880 will open. Of mackerel, the total catch of the Mass- achuse‘ts fect in 1879 is given at 156,125 barrels, against 144,205 barrels in 1878 Astothe relative value of the mackerel fishing off the New Fingland coast, as com- pared with those in Provincial waters, the report says, ‘‘it will be noticed our catch began in April ending the middle of De- cember, threexfourths of a year. It is now in contemplation sending vessels south to proseciite this branch the remaining three months, making our catch perennial, while the Provincial catch with favorable weather lasts about four months. Of herring, there was an almost total failure of the Bonne Bay, Bay of Islands and, Fortune Bay catch, with only a light catch off the coast of Labrador. But the catch off Massachusetts shore in October was better both in the quahiy and quantity of the fish caught than it has been for years. Prices ruled low throughout the year. Of codfish, all the vessels engaged in fishing returned in safety with full fares. But the fleet was greatly reduced, ani even with full fares, the total catch is not up to the average ; and an active fall demand re- duced the stock on hand at the close of the season to less than the quantity usually on hand at that time. Of hake and haddock the receipts show a marked falling off. Of salmon there has also been a sinall decrease. The total receipts of fish of all kind: during the year, whi:a not varying much past few years, ias been much more satisfactory and in the aggregate amount from the profitable t» both producers and deslers. The extent, value and importance of this branch of industry is being more general: unders:ood antl appreciated. ~_—- <= o- —— —-—-- -—— Tae Argus says :--Im an article in the las Her tid, abounding with sarcastic denunciation of thinys in general aud Senator Carvell ip par ticular. the editor goes tar out of his way, t have a fing at a certain body of christians in this city.
