April l4—(A.P.)-— Eighteen-year-old Lloyd Lewis, of Plattsburx. Mo., sat in a Man- hattan skyscraper office tonight and saw his dream of a college edu- cation swept away becamw he didn't understand the meaning of plagiarism. Lloyd, announced as the winner of a 85,000 prize essay contest spon- sored by Eddie cantor. the comedian, seemed nothing but be- wildered as Cantor’. agent told him he was disqualified from the prim because he had plagiarized. word for word, part of an article written several months ago by Dr. Frank Kingdon, President of Neward Uni- versity, for a magazine. Ca.ntor‘s contest was for a peace essay. and Dr. Klngdori's article had been on the same subject. Wide-eyed, the farm youth turn- ed to questioners. "What is plagiarism?" he asked. "I don't know what it means." Informed, he readily admitted copying Dr. Kingdon’s article and submitting it as his own in the con- test which he entered as a junior in the Plattsburg High School. "Sure. I copied the article." he told hL3 astounded audience, "I don't see anything wrong in that. It was much better than I could have done and honestly I don't see anything wrong in it." Cantor's agent, Ben F. 1-Iolzman. said that Lloyd would be sent back I‘ Fattsburg by plane tonight with the total shows little if any in- crease, says the Review. .___{——-— EAST INDIANS HOLD BUBBAB pour or spam. April 14 —(CP) — While Dominion and eastern pro- vincial bond issues continue to maintain a note of stabi ty with prices somewhat higher than a month ago, western provincal bonds reacted unfavorably to the developments in Alberta where a provincial issue of $3,200,000 matur- ing April 1 was not paid, says the monthly review of Wood Guiidy and Company.
