LONG SEASON Dow, Clowater writes us that there are between 40 and. 50 horses training at the Fredericton track, and that the 1958 harness racing season will be the longest in the history of the Fredericton raceway. It will get underway on June 2 and will conclude October 13, with racing each Monday and Thursday nights, except during Exhibition Week, the first week in September, when meets will be staged September 1, 4 and 6. This will give the Fredericton Raceway 40 meets, with a mini- mum of 320 dashes. The big event again this year will be the Walter Dale Memorial Race, which will be staged August 7 with a purse of $3,000. This is a two-heat event, with most of the top free-for-allers in the Mari- time p r 0 vi II c e s competing Other features will be a $1,000 junior free-for-all‘ on Labor ‘Day, September 1, and a $2,00 fr -for -all on September 4. Racew y of- ficials are also considering hav- ing a special event for three- year-old trotters and pacers some- time during the season. ' The writer has a very pleasant- recollections of Fredericton track and its people. In 1936,‘ I won the free-for-all Trot with Heather- bell in 2.08 1-2, 2.08 1-2 and 2.08 3-4, and the 2.20 Trot with the little, Newfoundland mare Har- vest Melody, best time 2.10 1-2. -Drivers in that race included Henry Clukey and Earl Avery. Trotters are there in large numbers, also pagers from the East; among them is Dana Irving with a Maine -owned stable, and we expect that Joe O’Brien will be racing‘ there. The harness horse publications haven’t carried anything on Joe’s string, the reason being that he is training them on the new track ter, California. GOOD PROSPECT We notice where the Maritime ,owned trotter, Singing Sword, 2.01 2-5, an eight-year-old bay stallion by Dean Hanover owned by the L. and G. stable of Hali- fax, N.
