Mrs. Robert Hen- derson, of the Nunship of Oxford, Kent took in mistake for medicine a quantity of oil of vitrel. A doctor was but death ensued in about seven Hamitron, Ont., June 2 On Friday a young man named Richard Henry Grant, belonging to the township of Caistor, and aged about 23, committed sui cide by shooting himself through the head. The cause is supposed to be mental de- rangement, superinduced by the burning of a quantity of cordwood belenging to him. Linpsay, Ont., June 2. A fatal accident occurred about five miles from here, yesterday morning, in the town- ship of Manners, causing the death of Mrs. Richardson, who was on her way to church at Janetville, accompanied by her son, who was driving. The horse ran away, throw- ing them out, and killing Mrs. Richardsen instantly. Her son was also badly injured. UNITED STATES. PorrsvILLE, Penn., June 2. On Saturday an explosion ot fire-damp took place in Glendon colliery, killing one boy and severely burning five others. New York, June 2. The recent imprisonment of a negro at Richmond, Va., fur miscegnation, has caused much alarm to mixed couples. R. negro, Was to have been tried on Monday, for marrying a white Woman. On Sunday she died, and it is believed the husband poisoned her. The Subproveso of St. Mary’s, Domini- ean, at New Orleans, recently received a letter from her brother, W. T. Corbet stating he would shortly arrive in New Or. leans, and threatening to assassinate several heads of the Catholic Church. The police were notified, and Corbet was arrested while at the Cathedral i inquiring for Father Rounal. He was born in Ireland, and has three sisters who are nuns ; his brother, he says, was hanged for attempting to kill the Duke of Edinburgh. Corbet says he be- ,came incensed because his parents willed all their property to the Church. It is be- lieved he is insane. Yesterday morning a band of masked men entered the house of a man named Murray, who was accused of the murder of Mrs. Costello, on the 18th instant, at Eaton, Ky., took him to a _ tree about a half a mile from his house, and hanged him. The N. Y. Z'rilune says Otto Strune, di- rector of the Pulkana Observatory, an- nounces that Russia has voted 250,000 roubles for the construction of the largest telescope that can be advantageously made. Strune intends to visit this country, ex- amine the great telescopes made here, and may contract with an American maker. The steamer Adriatic, at New York, to day, brought 786 immigrants,mostly Sw edes and "Norwegians, a and all en route for Kan- sas, where they propose to settle. During the present month 18,328 immigr ants have arrived in New York, which is 7, 000 in ex- cess of the arrivals fur the same month last year. Pirrssure, Pa The agreement last year between the iron merchants and the puddlers of $5 per ton for puddling, expired on Saturday, and mill owners and their employes having fail- ed during the past month to come to ‘terms for the ensning year, work was suspended this morning in all the iron mills in this vicinity, and a serious lockout is threatend. The puddlers demand the scale of prices paid them last year, while the manufactur- ers claim they cannot afford to pay $5 for work done in other cities for $3.50 or $4. A SERIES OF © CALAMITIES. The Russian towns of Wolnike and Gbho- jez, and four large villages in various dis- tricts have been burned. Thousands of peasants have been reduced to beggary. ATCHISON, Kansas, A terrible rain June 2 aud wind storm visited Frankfort, Marsall County, at six o'clock last evening, and lasted over two hours. F..B. Taylor’s warehouse was torn to pieces; several small houses, stores and stables were damaged: The houses of Messrs. Fox, Ceesar and V aughan; three miles from the town, were blown down, and the inmates considerably injured. The Fox House and contents were blown into the river. A messenger just in from Irving says the storm at that point blew down 16 houses, killed 12 persons, wounded about 40, and several are missing The residences of Ji as, S. Warden, Mr. Armstrong, J. Williams, Mr. Thomson and 12 others (names of owr- ers not given) were totally de-nolished. The Presbyterian church, public school building, and Irving elevator were ccm- pletely destroyed. The east span of the railroad bridge crossing the Blue River was blown down. A committee, with funds, provisions and lumber, left Atchison this jafternoen, to supply the wants of the T. A cyclone struck the earth four miles from Summit, on Friday evening, and tore through. the country four hundred yards wide and ten miles long, levelling every- thing in its track. The house of Alexander Scrubb was unrocfed, and his wife’s skull fractured. ATrcntson, June 2 The storm west of this city was far more fatal than early reports indicated. Frank- port specials give the following list of casn- alties there and in the vicinity, comprising : James Downs and wife, killed; John Howe, a boy 13 years, killed; Mr. Grooves, killed; Mrs. Johnson, Joshua Howe, James V aughan, Henry Sarzor, Robert Canghlin, Miles Kelly and family, all badly injured. At Irving twelve persons were killed out- right and. forty wounded, and most of the latter seriously, and many will die. ACon- cerdia despatch states the storm was ex- tremely violent 1 in the vicinity of Palphos, Ottawa Co.; 15 dead bodies were brought in from two square miles of territory. Rome, June 2. Thirty new craters opened at Mount Kina. They cover several square miles and all pour out lava. The eruptions of Vesu- viuls are increasing. Sy. JosepH, Mo., June 2. A dispateh totals Irving, Kansas, dated June Ist, reports thirty deaths certain, and 53 people bodily injured by the recent eyclone. People want money to get the necessaries which are at hand. ‘Ten per- sous were buried to-day. From fifty to sixty families at Frankport, Kansas, are houseless. and destitute of clothing, provisions and farming imple- ments. Messina, June 2 The eruption of Mt. Etna continues. A considerable portion of the bed of Alcantara river is covered with lava. The damage to agriculture is very serious. The village of ne has been abandoned. Rome, June 2. Almost all the city of Mantna is flooded, and the embankment of the river Minco is in danger of being washed away. Rovigo is seriously threatened. Twe thousand workmen are employed strengthening the dykes. The river Adige has also risen. SOUTH AMERICA. Buenos Ayres, May 24, ; via Lonpox, June 2. 4 Guijarro, the Bolivian envoy, is expect- ed daily. It is reported he brings powers to issue Letters of Marque against Chilian commerce. Chilian telegrams to the 24th April re- port a fight off Loa between the Chilian gunboat ** Magallanes,” ‘carrying a 115 pound rifle and some smaller pieces, and the fast Peruvian corvette ‘* Unien,’ and gunbeat ‘' Pileomayo,” the two carrying ten 70 pound rifles, besides sinaller cannon. The Chilians’ claim to have damaged the ‘Union,’ and driven off the two Peru- vians, but evidently the ‘* Magallanes ” suffered considerably. An engagement occurred between the Chilian ironclad ‘‘ Planco En Callada” and gunboat ‘* Chacabneo” and the Peruvian, foris at Pisgua. The gunboat lost one killed and six wounded, but the town is reported as almost demolished by the ships’ fire. The inhabitants however skedaddled by the zigzag railway up the mountain be- hind the town and saw the affair from a safe distance. Paxama, May 24, / via New York, June 2. 4 The wnly action taken by the Chilian fleet fora week is the destruction of the submarine cable off Africa, the burning of the town of Mejallous Depree, and the sinking of steam launches there. The Peruvian fleet is still at Callao, apparently afraid of the Chilian iron clads. President Daza is at Tarva with six thou- sand men, Prado, who will take the chief command while operations are being conducted on Peruvian soil. Lonpon, June 2. Vice Admiral Seymour, of the British Navy, in a letter to ‘the Mor ning Post says that the facts -oncerning the recent naval eugagement off tie Peruvian coast are that the Peruvian ironclad turret ship *‘ Huas- ear’ sunk the Chilian wooden ship ‘ Es- maralda,” and that the Peruvian armor- plated ship ‘‘ Independencia,” in pursaing the Chilian wooden ship ‘‘ Covadeonga, ran on a reef and was wrecked. << -—_——— - Liver is King.
