A joint report Wednesday by the Dominion Bureau of Statis- tics and the labor department showed a January jobless rate of 8.3 per cent: one out of every 12 persons in the labor force was unemployed. The Maritimes had the high- est. jobless rate in the country. climbing to 14.8 per cent of the labor force in January from 11.6 per cent in December. The number of Jobless increased 18.- 88.000 in the Atlantic provinces in the month. The national unemployment rate compared with 6.3 per cent in December and 8.5 per cent in January last year. when there were 545.000 unemployed.
