Storage Roi Danger Siressed Danger of storage rot in potatoes will possibly be greater this year because of much of the 1948 crop breaking down into soft rot in farmers‘ cellars and storagcs, warns Mr. S. G. Peppln. officer in charge of Dominion Seed Potato Certification. All potato storagel, and that includes not only trackslde ware- houses but farmers‘ cellars. should be thoroughly cleaned and disin- iected before the new crop is harvested and stored. Every storage is liable to cer- tain. disease organisms or germs, as some people call them. Many of these are rot producing organ- isms. which get into the storage through the soil or through the medium of various rots which de- velop in the tubers throughout the storage period. These rot producing organisms may well be present in storage: today and the wise farmer or dealer will use those means at his disposal to prevent any recurrence or development of such rot getting into his new crop. Every storage bin and cellar should be thoroughly cleaned and the windows left open to allow it to dry out completely. It should then be sprayed with a solution containing two lbs. of biuestone in ten gals. oi water. A little limc may be added. but certainly not more than half a pound with each two lbs. of the blueatone. Mr. Peppin emphasises that it is the bluesione which does the work of killing the rot organisms. Spray the floors and. ceilings thor- oughly. An ounce of prevention with this disiniectant may save CHARLOTTETOWN Increased Business Failures Reported Across C_a_nada OTTAWA. Businesses defaulting were those which could liva only in times of high demand, great shortages and high prices, the spokesman said. Only Provinces to show n. de- cline in the number of bankrupt- cies were Ontario and Nova Sco- tin. HORSES TEAS PAGE THREE Civil Marriage Question Held Over By Synod HALIFAX, Sept. lS-(CP) The Church of England in Canada today heard one of its committees report that provisions for civil marriages in Canada "would, on the whole. be desirable." Latenthe church‘: general synod defeated a motion which would have asked the Provincial Govern- ments concerned to pass permiss- ive leglslatlon. This automatically throws out the subject until at least the next General Synod. Canon W. W. Judd of (605 Jarvis St.) Toronto, in the report of the Council for Social Service, said the issue had been studied for a year by the Church's committee on marriage and divorce. This was the case for clvll marriages: "l. The church has not suf- ficient reason to justify her in demanding it. “2. The church should not do anything to oppose it. "3. Provision for civil mar- riage would. on the whole, be desirable." Civil marriages are those per- formed by a public servant or marriage commissioner. Such mar- riages now are performed in some parts of Western Canada. Canon Judd said the commis- sion's report formed the basis for a decision by the C. S. S. execu- tive committee. This measure read: ' "That in view of new conditions of late years. such as the increase in divorces in Canada and con-i sequent requests for remarriage; the increase of population unat- tached-or lightly attached — to the Church; and the presence in Canada of persons other than the Christian and Jewish faiths. “And in view of the embarrass- ing position in which our clergy is ANNOUNCEMENT ” " To Home Dressmakers...
