Expect Free Trade Otter To Get ‘Warming Over’ By DAVE McINTO.SH Caiiadian Press Staff Writer OTTAWA (CP)-—A Political hot potato —~B—ritain’s proposal for Anglo - Canada free trade—is .bmmd to get another war-minig over in the Commons soon. The issue had more or less died down in recent weeks until re- porters asked British Prime Min- ister Macmillan about it at his Friday press conference here. Mr. Macmillan replied that Britain stands by its proiposal for an Anglo - Canadian free trade area to be developed during the next 17 years. “It may be ‘an ideal,” Mr. Macmillan said, “but it's on the table if anyone wants to take it up in whole or in part.” SEEMED BEST WAY He said Britain had advanced the proposal because it seemed that the best way to fight com- munism was to increase the free world’s trade and wealth. The issue goes back to the early days of Prime Minister Diefenba«ker’s government. Mr. Die-fenbawker returned from the Commoniwealth prime minis- ters’ conference a year ago and said hope of his government would be for some diversion of 3 Canadian pu.rcha~ses in the United States to Britain. Last fall, at the Comimonwtealth finance ministers’ conference at Mont Tremblant,‘ Que, Peter Thorneycroft, form er British chancellor of the exchequer, sur - gested Anglo - Cvanadian free trade. Finance Minister Fleming said this would entail overcoming great difficulties. Since then, the Canadian government has made no oflficial comment on the Brit- ish proposal. LIBERALS PROD The Liberals in the Commons have demanded repeatedly to know the governments attitude on the Bni-tirsh suglgestion. The Progressive Conservatives have asked what the Liberals would do, to which Opposition Leader Pearson has reipliied that his party would give the matter careful consideration. The government is obviously sensitive about the British pro- posal, partiicuila-rly at a time when it has before it a recom- mendation of the taridf board for an increase in levies against United Kimgdoun woollens. QUESTION DODGED Earlier, ence, Mr. Macmillan had been asked the same question: Would the British proposai be discussed at the Commonwealth economic conference at Montreal in Sep- tember? . Mr. Maicmililan Implied that it would be. But \he dodged a direct question who ,r he and Mr. Diefenbaker had discussed. it dur- ing last week’s talks here. There the matter rests, for the_ moment. But it seems unlikely that the Liberals will give the subject much rest between now and the Montreal conference—- and after.
