from Novsmbor l ip February 15 and this
is practically the only time that the fish
fresh. But the fish are at this time full
‘oi spawn which does not mature till
spring and smelts are said to spawn but
once a year.
The result of the fishery as now carried
on is todestroy myriads ofthe mother
`ilsh, as it is the large spawn fish which
are most easily caught and which ore
most sought after by the fishermen as
they bring the best price. Our corres-
pondent argues that this must tend
ultimately to destroy the smelt industry,
unless the Government shall restrict the
fishing, or provide some means of replac-
ing the large amount of spawn destroyed.
This argurncntis enforced bya refer-
ence tothe time when smelts were so
plentiful thrrt they were used by our Is-
land farmers for manure. Their present
diminished numbers are held to indicate
the approach of the time when the smelt
fishery may be rendered unprofitable or
wholly destroyed. lvhat has happened
in mackerel, cod and lobster fishing
around our Island shores we all know and
the measures taken by the Government
to replenish the salmon, trout and lobs-
ter flsherieshy means of hatcheries are
held to indicate the need of like measures
