Last evening in St. James' Church,
'to a large collgregationt Rev. Dr. Ful-T
,ierton preached the first of a series'
of War Sermons, his subject being
/‘The Reserves of the Almighty." He
took his text from the 6th chapter
of the second book of Kings: "And
Elisha prayed and said, Lord ll pray
thee open his eyes that he may see."
The preacher in Opening dealt with
the public proclamation in Britain
issued recently calling on the people
to join in daily prayer in behalf of
the soldiers, and sailors. A nation
at war is an imposing spectacle, but
a naltion at prayer is vastly more ln-
teresting. It is a cali to the citi-
zens to see the spiritual force lying
behind all external move-ments_ This
was the case in Ilsrael. When the
King of Syria, realized that his chief
opponent was in God's representa-
tive, Elijah, he believed that his cap-
ture would be the turning point in
the campaign and would issue in com-
plete victory. For this reason he
invested the hill Beshan where the
prophet was with his servant. When
morning broke on the hill the servant.
keen of eyesight, sprang to his feet
and ioolrng down saw the,gleam and
glitter ofx spear and sword in the rift
of the lifting we-st. Only that and
nothing more. His vision was limi-
ted to the foreground. hence the nit-
ter cry "Alasi my master, what shall
we do?" This was the appeal of
the earthly to the heavenly Almighty.

For that purpose this ilrilperial race 0’
ours entered whole-heartedly into the
struggle. We stood forth as thc
champion of an outraged pubéic law
as the defender of s. martyre people
a ‘bulwark for the cause of humanl-
ty and` the ideals for which Christ
lived and died. It is by seeing God
by these noble visions. by the hlgl
and holy ideals that naltlons and in
dividuals live. A hundred years ago
many thought that the famous stream
of Britain’s life was losing itself in
hogs and' sands, and they became a
prey to unnamed fears. Then they
saw her rise to "brace herself for
_Christ as against Corsica and they
were ashamed of their unfilial fears.
The experience was repeated in this
war_ 'Many saw the decadence oi
the nation, its moral deterioration.
The foreground of the picture was
full of stress and' strain of blood
shed and d`eath. They saw the im-
possible, useless sacrifice, the Cross
that will not change. They saw only
the present evil and not the very pre-
sent help in trouble, but when the
whole Empire rallied at the call of
duty and its manhood and woman-
hood _alike rose to the summit ol
chivalry and self-sacrifice, then they
felt that their fears were rebuked.
more than ever, notwithstanding
years of bitter conflict and great sac-
rifice. we are able Ito sing with the
poet: "Though severed by shadowy
mountains and many o sounding sea,
one in language, race and fevour, one
in heart are we. ready to meet the
world in arms, if needs must be." We
still seo the merciless, murderous foe
in the foreground, but we also be-
hold Ithe forces which are in our fa-
vour on their way from God_
The preacher touched on the mai!-
niiicent work of the Canadian troops
in this war and said that the secret
of their indomitable courage and te-
nacity lay in the unseen environment
and their faith in the advancing for-
ces of the Empire coming to their aid
in fulfilment of the promise and plan
of their leaders. They believed and
trusted and were strong. Truly the
foreground is still forebidding-injuc

That tile Twilight Organ Recitals
are growing in favor was again
evidenced on Saturday when the
fourth of the series held in St.
Peter's Cathedral attracted a gather-
ing whlcll almost completely filled
the church. Mr. L. W. Watson in
his interpretation of the works of
the world'e greatest composers,
such as Mozart. Handel, Gounod, and
others, showed wonderful technique
and proved himself a master of thc
keys. Needless to say, everyone was
delighted. Prof. Vinnicombe in his
violin number, Avo Marla, with or-
gan accompaniment, proved that he
has lost none of his genius in that
line, the selection being decidedly
well rendered.
