Take Active Steps to Have
the New Winter Route

The Summersldo Board of Trade held
an interesting and largely attended mect-
ing last night. After the Secretary had
road thqueorrsspondcnce dealing with the
Summcfalde-Cape Tormeutino route, the
President referred to the non-fuldlment of
the promises- made by the late Minister of
Marino and Fisheries and the Minister of
Public Works tn have the dredge Prince
Edward, _ operate at Capo Tormcntiuc.
These promises he said had been made ln
 faith, but after the retirement of
the Minister, other influences had been
brought to bear which prevented the
work being done. This, however, he did
not consider of any serious import as far
as the accommodation for the winter boat
at this pier is concerned. He was glad to
inform the Board that the repairs to the
pier were being pushed toward completion
and that the steamer’s berth would be
ready for close of navigation. The
question of greatest importance then was
the matter of havinsz the Stanley placed
on this route the hour the Northumber-
land was removed from thc Summerside-
Point. du Chene route.
Capt. Joseph Read, M. L. A., referred to
the matter of the dredge Prince Edward,
being taken tothe eastern end ~of the
Island. He was convinced that there is
suillcient water at Tormentine pier for
the Stanley; but while it would no douhl.
have béen desirable, that dredging should
have been done according to the plaas
furnished, still it would have been mainly
useful In dredging away an excuse.
Mr. Davld Rogers thought that the
Government was lnsincerc in its promises
in reference to this matter. It was a
pleceof deception all through. He was
afraid that the some objection would bo'
brought to beer as wcrc used -last year.
We should be more energetic and not
allow the Governmcntto fool uc again.
Mr. Richard Hunt said that the fact
that the dredging is not done, will not
prove fatal to the establishment of this
route. We must insist upon having tho
boat put on the route next winter
according to promise. _
Mr. Neil McQuarrie moved that a
committee be appointed to correspond
with the departments of Public Works
and Marine and Fisheries and if necessary
to send one or more delegates to Caps
Tormentine in the interests of this
mm ter. The motion was seconded by Mr.
.L A Brace. The following committee

Hunt, Neil McQuarrie, President R. C.
McLeod and Secretary D. K. Currie.
The following committee wasi also
appointed to represent the Board of
Trade at a meeting to be held at
Tignish on Tuesday, the 29th inst., to
consider train arrangements, and the
Summerside Tcrmentine route; Messrs,
W. A. Brennan, Captain Read and
Mr. McQuarrie.
Messrs. Wm. Stewart, W. A. Brennan,
G. H. Wright, and others also addressed
the meeting. '
