CHARLOTTETOWN DRIVING PARK a paltry sum, as a washout. It was Andrew Perry. well- known Summerside owner, who paid the paltry sum 5260.00 and it was the same Mr. Perry who two years later sold Bay State Pat for more than S20.000. Mr. Perry very luckily turned his new acquisition over to Roach MncGregor. and the resourceful young Islander made the horse a star in a few short months. The man who raised "Pat" Chris O'Donnell, of Maine had trained the young horse on the trot but. Bay State Pat. couldn't trot fast enough. for even the slow classes. Roach Mactlregor. today only twenty-seven years old. be- lieved that Mr. Perry's new horse cniild pace. and pace fast. and he quickly proved it. Under MacGreg- or's clever handling the horse took a mark of 2.06 in his first year in the Marltlmes, and was practical- ly unbeatable when he raced in Upper Canada. Last year. 1955. u n d c r MacGi-egorls master- ful teamiiig he ran away from his opposition at the annual Charlotte- town Exhibition and then went on to Upper Canada where he was clocked in 2.02 1-5. "Roach" won twenty-three straight dashes with per Canada and the United States, and It is known that sooner or later he will be moving from the Island. There are some people who in- tiiiiivcly know how to bring out all the speed that a race horse pos- sesses. They know how to rate him along in a race, they know to a split second when to pull out and make the winning drive to the wire. MacGregor is that kind of a relnsman. and together with these talents he is a daring and fearless competitor. It is claimed that in 1955 he was the wlnningest driver- tralner in Canada. He won many races in the Marltlmes under the United States Trotting Association Rules and even more in Upper Canada under the Canadian Trot- ting regulations. If the record of his wins from both Associations is totalled the claim is good. So nat- urally II the assertion that he is one of Canada's leading drivers despite his youth, and worthy to be rated the coming starts of to- ITIOITOW.
