The man in the chair of torture was re- monstrating with the doctor of dental sur- gere. “That's all right,” said the dentist, “but you are foolish not to let me build that tooth up with gold for you.” ‘**What’s the use? It will cost me $40, you say, and I cannot afford to eat my $5 a week board with a $40 tooth. It is too much dead cupital.’’ ‘*Is it?’’ smiled the dentist. “Listen to a story. About ten years ago lI was trying to make a living in the west in partner- ship with < faiiow who wasn’t any luckier than I wae We worked arouud to the vorth, where the winters are as bad as they are in the Klondiks,.and our funds, kept getting lower 2: lower until starva tins dawn iv table with us. The waether was getting colder, too, and the last wacon train out was booked for the following Sunday, then two daysaway. -It wus Our last chance, for to remain there ior the four months till the trail wus open meant death, sure. The price to go with the train was $25 each. Just what $26 amounts to you will never know until you need it as badly as we did. ‘*We hadn’tacent on earth. and nothing to put up to get one with. It was indeed acold day for bothof us. By Saturday noon we had given up all hope of getting out and had retired to our shanty. As we sat gazing in stupid despair at each otber my partner grinned a ghastly grin and the gleam of the gold in his filled teeth caught my eye. I concealed my feelings and quiet- ly asked him how :nany teeth he had filled. He told me there were six, und one of them was nearly a solid gold tooth and had cost him $50. In a minute I had com- municated my idea to him, and in another minute I had wy tools, for I had been studying dentistry then, at work in his mouth, digging away like a miner. It was a rich field, and in half an hour | bad out every bit of gold in those teeth of his and had beaten it up into a wad that we took to the owner of a saloon who knew what raw gold was worth. He looked it over and offered §60 for the wad. ‘“‘My partner kept his mouth shut and so did I, and when the train moved out with its wagons next day we had our place in the front row and $5 apiece spending money. Six mouths iater we struck luck and I filled my partner’s teeth and never charged him a cent.”’ ‘‘Go on with mine,”’ said the man in the chair, ‘‘and charge me the same.’’—Wash- ington Star. breo Aw O_p Axo Weir Triep Ramevr — Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup hax beer u-ed forover fifty years by millions ot m thers for their chiidrea while teething with perfect succe-s. Moliere himself was the actor who brought about the unrehearsed scene between himself and hisass. The play was ‘“‘Don Q ixoto,’”’ and Moliere played Sancho. Soue minutes before he bad to appear on the stage he was waiting in the wings, mounted on his ass. But the latter suddenly forgot his part and in- sisted upon appearing on the scene with- out delay. Nor was it of any avail that half a dozen assistants hung around his head and clung desperately to his tail. The ass, with Moliere on his back, dashed wildly among the actors on the scene, and the fiasco would have been complete bad not Moliere saved the situation by shout- ing to the audience, while jogying along, ‘**Pardon, gentlemen! Pardon, ladies! This confounded beast has come on against my wishes!’ The public responded at once with roars of laughter and applause, but Moliere never again mounted an ass.— Westuninster Gazette. A High Hitch. After General Forrest’s raid into Mem- phis larse stories were told about his hero- isin andthe marvelous doings of his troops One of the best illustrations of the ad- miration inspired by the general came from a negro soldier who claimed to have seen him as be rode up in front of the Gayoso hotel. Its tone is admirable throughout, and the touch firm and :esponsive— just what we musicians like—in fact, an excellent piano im every respect. The new Orchastral Attachment (which 1 understand can be obtained on “Bell” pianos only) 18 also an excellent feature, and one which will doubtless excite inte! est with all classes.
