At the -- ' ' the Judge made snorder setting argument Another very successful Red gross clinic for the examination and treatment of crippled children has lust been completed by Dr. '1‘. B. Acker, orthopedic specialist of I-Ioll- fsx. who has spent the Diet nine dove in the Province conduction clinics in dummsrside and Ohar- lottetcwn. This was Dr. Ackers thirteenth trip to the Island for this important part of the Red Cross Society's activities. A total of. 148 examinations was made by the specialist, 102 on children and 4d on adults, 21 of the children reporting at the clinics for the first time. Fourteen operations and manipulations also wen per- formed. Several children who had been under treatment and observa- tion for some time were discharged from the clinic as cured. In many orthopedic conditions the treat- ment is qullo prolonged. some- times stretching over a period cf years, but the Red Gross workers who have been associated with the children since this work was com- menced say that the improvement seen in the children from clinic to clinic, is little short of marvelous. One child discharged from this last clinic who hsd been under treat- ment for a club foot for two years, now has no evidence of lameness. Another, who reported at the first clinic in July 1928, with both hips dislocated, and later spent many months in hospital and in plaster casts. has so improved in his walk- ing and growth that he is hardly recognized as the same child who came to the clinic seven years ago. Another, who was operated on last October for wry neck and whose head was badly twisted. has now a wonderful correction with head cr- cct and only \’ery close scrutiny would detect what the condition rad previously been. Different types of disabilities seen at the clinic were fist feet and weak feet, tuberculous and dislo- cated joints, infantile and spastic paralysis. Two new cases with alight paralysis of the muscles of arms and legs reported, the condition be- ing apparently the result of a mild attack of infantile paralysis oc- curring last summer. Three child- ren with wry neck due to faulty posture were given exercises for correction. Several cases of back strain and spinal curvature were seen; one case of the latter, age l4 had never attended school cw- lng to the deformity, but is now well on the way to correction. Var- ious other deformities resulting from injury, infections, burns, etc, were examined. Not only does the Red Cross bring Dr. Acker to the Province twice a year for crippled children's clinics, but it also maintains a. Cor- rective Clinic under the direction of a trained masseuse, to whom many of the children are refer-era! for special exercises, massage and muscle training. Dr. Acker express- ed himself as being very much pleased with the improvement in the children attending these clin- ics. Along 11...» Waterfront i 4 A ht K. 0., for (mu.
