sermon the nation's flagrant, beset-
tlng nln, easy divorce, and the iq-
cgngruoua conflict of stats laws on
the subject are unsparingly character-
ized. 'His preacher indicates the only
way out of this immoral tangle
which is wrecking the homo and do-
aaoratingltba marriage altar. The
text is ark x, 9, “What tharoiore
God hath joined together let not man

lg to-day we find conflicting ideas in
mortal combat over the marriage al-
tar. 'lho one is the Christ idea,
which declares that marriage is not
a confederation that can bo broken
at will, but an indissoluble union.
This idea asserts that altar .marriage
the twain in every sense becomes
one. 'Ilia second idea declares that
easy divorw is not g crime, but oi-
ten, for tho social good, a necessity.
It says that when g man and a wo-
man are unequally yokod together it
is better that they be separated by
law, even if the cause for reparation
ba not so serious as that recognized
in the Bible, and, more, that they
may, ii they wish, contract new mar-
films.
But, though J amos Bryce in his
"American Commonwealth” affirms
that tho family as a unit is. "the one
fundamental and permanent problem
of human llia and society,” yet
everywhere, by reading the signs of
the times, we can sec that by easy
divorce the sanctity of the home is
imperilod. Everywhere the danger
signals are being lifted, to prove
that marriage is becoming more and
more n more temporary convenience.
Carroll D. Wright in his labor statf
istlcs declares that in tho year 1889
there were 36,072 divorces in the
state of Illinois alone and that there
was one divorce to every fifteen mar-
riages. Ile went on to show that
from 1867 to 1886 there were 328,-
716 divorces in tho United States
and thntl nach year the proportion of
divorces to the number' of inhabitants
in the United States was on the in-
crease, just as the individual wealth
of the Americans por capita increases
year by year. So awful is the
spread of this divorce evil and so
blunted are becoming the once keen
edges of public sentiment upon this
question that Morgan Dix, who in
no Sense can be called a sensation-
alist, uttered lost Thanksgiving
Day this scathing invective against
wholesale licensed libertinism, now
being practiced through the wide open
doors of the legal courts of our land:
“The divorce evil is terrible. It is
an evil we must try to uproot. Once
upon a time ii we ever mentioned the
fact that a person had been divorced
we spoke oi it under our breath, as
a subject not proper for conversa-
tion. We then rcgnrdod divorce as
something closely related to disgrace,
and that not long ago either.”
Against the further spread and for
the extermination of this divorce evil
the Catholic Church is already up in
arms. Against it only a few weeks
ago all tho Rhode Islnnd ministers
banded themselves together to give
religious combat. Thus, as the pub-
lic lenders of many denominations
are fighting this undermining and
would be destroyer of the home, it
is not inappropriate for me to
speak n few words in rcference to
those lvgnl ond domestic causes which

gery and theft there must be con-
rertcd action between nations as
well aa -states. Why.. in-the same
way. should there not be concerted
action between' ltates in reference to
tho divorce law? But though con-
certed and harmonious actiolrby the
different state courts should be N-
garded as a necessity yet we -find
the actual conditions just the re-
verse. To illustrate how a man can
defy tho divorce courts of one stats
by living in another state, a promin-
ent mamberoi the Presbyterian Gen-
eral Assembly Committee told me
that a short time ago a man dlod in
the United States and left' three leg-
al widows. He left three widows,
and he was not a believer in Brigh-
am Young either! How was that? A
few years ago- this man went to a
western stats and there settled and
married. After awhile ha became
tired 01 his wife and decided he
would marry another womgn. So
this man left the state where he was
then living and went into another
state, pot I divorce and there ro-
married. 0! course the state of his
former reoidenoo did not recognize
the second marriage. V
Timo passed on, and _this husband,
tired of his second wife. Ho moved
to another stats, got a divorce and
married 5 third ‘wife. The marital
disease with him by this time wal
becoming chronic. But now neither
the first nor the second state whore
he used to live rocognlwd his third
marriage as legal. Time paused, and
this husband oi' many wives died.
What was tha result? Each of his
former marital companions inherited
the property of the dead man which
then existed in hor own stats! By
law that man in three different. stat-
es left three different wives, each A
legal wife in her own stats, but il-
legal in the other two states. Such
is an instance of the ridiculous and
infinite absurdltles existing between
tho connicting divorce courts if our
land.
A second breakwater to dam back
this submcrging flood of national in-
famy: It is for the gospel ministers
to protest against it by practice as
well as by preaching. 'ins pulpit
cannot speak loudly and with the
voice of a true leader un.-.-so at the
some time it refuses to become a
party to the national crime ol easy
divorce. What do I moan lfy this
statement? That the minister him-
self shall not be a blatant and a
brutal divorce? Oh, no. No self
respecting Christian church would al-
low her minister to continur preach-
ing in her pulpit after a divorce es-
capade. Paul writes, "A bishop
must be blameless, the husband of
one wife." No minister’s life can be
blameless when ho turns his back
upon his first, wifo fofan unjust
cause. But I do mean this: A min-
ister should not oiilcinto at tho sa-
cond marriage of a divorce unless ho
himself knows positively that the
divorced man was not culpable in the
snapping of the marital bonds. By
such "_ ministerial course public sen-
timent would be aroused against this
national evil, and aroused quickly
and permanently.
I have taken only lately this stand
in reference to the clergymarfs ra-
sponsibility. Like hundreds and
thousands of other ministers I have
hcrctoioro said to myself: "I am
not in any way compelled to look
into the personal characters oi those
whom I unite in marriage. When I
usodx to live in New York state I had
to ask the contracting parties a l0l1g
list of questions and make a report
to the county officials in reference to
the same. But in the state of Illi-
nois the clerk of the county court
does that. Hs asks the questions.
He gives the iiccnso. Ho is respon-
sible ior the marriage, und not I."
But a short time ago, when talking
to a brother minister upon the sub-
ject, hs said: "You are wrong.
You cannot shirk your responsibility
in that way." 'lhcn I commenced to
look ut. this rospomilrility in anoth-
er wny. I said to myself; "Yes, I
