Allow me to say thatit certainly is loubifal whether any good can come from this publication or from any news about i; and on the other hand it is sure todo much harm, for the scholar will soon perceive be- hind the slim veil of peeudo-enlightenment the falee issue ofabsurd uoreality which the fanciful chromo-display poorly disguises, and ibe jayman will be in real danger of being misled altogether. It would not be d flicult to point out how trivial and unwarranted are the suggestions of change in the passage giveu from the ninth chapter of the Book Ecclesiasties, where the authorised version of the King James Bible is well upheid by the origina); but it 1s mainly against the effect of hereti- cal teaching under the specious plea of intellectual endeavor that a warning 1s needed in the unauthorised ex- pounders. It is very true that happily self- const tuted revisers of the Word, as kept and dispensed by the Church «cf God who gave it birth, have been duly relegated to the proper retirement which their upcanon- icalness required, and the present attempt will meet its fate in the same way; bat in the meantime it is to be regretted that the peace of the Church at large should _be vexed by the dissemination cf aggressive texts published by enterprising bookfirms, at the instance as in this case of the faculty of a noble seat of learning and under the hand of one of its professors in all the glamour of modern fuss and feather. If fivally, as is most natural, the most accomplished and at the same time the most faithless of New York journalists ehould herald this enterprise as an acqni- sition, why should he be followed by ‘the press of a truer type among a people loyal to the faith. Detracts from the Fame That Should Have } Been Bismarck’s, | Half a dozen years ago, says the London | Telegraph, Prince Bismarck was the most powerful statesinan, not only in Germany batin Eurepe. A long aad laborious life, devoted absolutely to a single purpose— the creation of a German empire under Prussian hegemony—had been crowned w.th complete success. It was an achiev- which would, in any case, have secured him in history the foremost place | among the men of action of the 19th cen- |tury. Had he retired from political life |} on the death of his master, the first Ger- | man emperor, without whose constant and ; loyal support his great work could never j have been accomplished, he would have 4 fended his public career in a blaze of jtriumph. The Just of power, however, | was too strong for him, and he lagged - if j not superfluous, at least, too arrogant— upon the stage until he was more or Jess cE remoniously bowed downstairs by the present kaiser, who was determined to | be his own master. At the time the sym- pathies of Europe were rather with the | nan of blood and iron, who, with such un- tloching persistency, and atthe erst of untold labors and innumerable _ sacrifices, had effected the great exploit of consolidat- iug German unity. But from the day of bis retirement or dismissal to this day he has been slowly though surely undermining his own reputation. The man who had crushed ruthlessly with an iron hand any indications, not only of insubordination, but of independence, on the part of his colleagues began a series of news- paper intrigues against his successor. His object was a matter of astonishment to all. Even his enemies—and he had naturally mace many—hardly dared to suspect that he sought to render the posi- Uon of any other chancellor than himself impossible. Yet the effect of successive revelations made in the colums of the Hamburger Nachrichten—his own special] organ—bhas left almost any other alter- native unimaginable. It would well nigh seem that Prince Bismarck endeavored to convey to the world that as his breath had made the German empire, so his breath would unmake it. The efforts he put forth at the close of the Franco-German war to put Francein a position of ¢om- plete isolation seem in his irritable retire- ment to have given place to a@ perverse desire to see Germany ina like condition, The author of the triple alliance has been doing hig utmost to dissolve the com- bination by sowing suspicion and distrust in the miads of Germany ’s allies, ment SEVEN PEOPLE GONE CRAZY, All Belong to one Family —The Son to Have Been Sacrificed. Mr. Etijah Rice, a respectable farmer of Tyrone, Ont., and some six or seyen mem bers of his family have become suddenly demented with a form of religious mania. The insanity comes from an old strain ia the blood of the father. The chief participa- tors in the sad affair are Mr. Rice and his eldest son, Lewi-. A few weeks ago achange was noticed iu Lewis, who spent much of histime in reading the Bible. He boldiy announced himself as ‘Prince of the Sand Hiil,” and preclaimed that he had been deputed to finish the red+mpt'on, which, he cla'med, Christ bad left undone. Then he began to show signs of violence, and at the same time the other six members of the family were seized with epidemical insanity. They were seized of the ided that Lewis was possessed of the devi], and conceived it their duty to knock the evil APPLES WANTED. The father thereupon proceeded to batter Lewis about the head with acha’r.in which act he was assisted by the other members of the family. Among them Lewis was almost killed, hs head being cut in a terrible manner. Lewis thinks that what the family did was per fectly right. The next sacred act was to celebrate the fa tof the Passover, and fur a sacrifice they contemplated offeering not a lamb but something far more acceptable, the eldest son, Lewis, out of whom the devil tad just been expelled. Fortunately be fure this was carried out one of the young er boys called on the Rev, M. Curtis and told him tbat they had knocked the devil out of Lewis, and asked him to pray for him. His strange manner aroused sus- picion, and the minister in company with Dr. Mitchell and Dr. McLaughlin, visited ihe farm, and discovered the ead state ot nifairs that has already been described. On consultation it was deemed~ advis- able to send Lewis and his father to the a*ylum at Kingston, This was done on Friday last. ROBUSER BAND CAPTURED, They Had Been Making Things Warm Al, Over Nebraska, Chief of Police Bepinsky has retarhe! to Hastings, Neb., from Hanover County, Kansas, where he traced the Devonport National Bank robbers and snecee led in d gang of the hald- est kind of robbers, whicu has Leen opera- ting through Nebra-ka the last six months. Last Saturday morning the bank cf Devonport was robbed of everything in the sate, which amoun‘ed to several thousand dollars. The work was doue by profes- sionals. Chief Bepinskv got on their track and followed them to Hanover, Kansas, where he arresied three of them. The robbers’ den was what is called a hole in the wall, and weg run by one of the gang who disposed of the stolen goods. In searching the cellar, the cflicer dug up about $500, $30 in silver, plenty of gold watches and jewelry, besides a large roll cf scrip and several dynamite bombs. Among the silverware found was that which was taken from the Devonport bank with the banker’s name engraved. The fellows, when searched, bad upon their persons, $1,300 in curreney, several Jarge revolyera and several large stillettos. ‘Two of the robbers were captured while asleep in their room, and the third one, being the proprietor of the d.ve was cap- tured while on duty. The three robbers were taken to Wasb- ington, Kansas, to await trial. Special police are busy scouring the state for other members of the gang. unearthing an organi Boys’ Qwo, $l; Girls' Qwo, $l.
