They won plaudits for a gritty performance a.l»t.hou=g.h none finished in the top 10. A touch of romance was injec- ted into the proceedings when it became known that Mihalic, a student of physical education in Belgrade, is soon to be marriied -to a geologist. He captured the fifth Marat-hon of the six he has attempted in the two years he has been at it. In the Olympic Games ‘in Aus- tralia he ran second to Frances Alain Mimoun in s-corc~hin.g tem- peratures. Kelley also was en- tered in that race but gave up in the heat. . Mihalic, who developed his slim but powenful legs as a cy- clist, finished Saturday in the time of two hours, 25 miiunutes and 54 seconds, well off the rec- ord. Kelley was more than a half- mile behind in 2:30.51. ' The heat, touch-im.g more than 80 degrees over the pavement along the route, was a heart- breaker. RECORD DISIPUTED Finlsandis Elm Pulkkinen wa s third, well behind Kelley. Until last year the Boston record had been held by Pul:kkine<n's coun- tryimvaih, Anttii Viskraui, who ran the distance in 2:14.14 in 1946. Later it was found that the Marathon course of years had athon distance. Of course, that stands as the record. T-ony Sapienza of Sou(.hbrids:e. Mass.. ran fourth Saturday and Mexico's Pedro Peralta was tirfth. It was an oddity of the race tih-art Kelley, Mihalic and Pulk- kinen, who frequently were found in that order at the head of the pack, carried the card Nos. 1, 2 and 3 respectively. ‘ Roland Miichaud, a 30-year-old Montreal plasterer, had the race- happy Bostoniavns agog in the earl-y part of the Marathon when he pounded along st=rongly in fourth place, sometimes in third. Later lvlicihnaud, who emiigra-ted to Oanadia from France five years ago, admitted he went into action as he would in a race of shorter distance, since this was only his second attempt over the maot-hon length. He fiiiniished in 22nd plza-ce, wrecked by cramps. BEST-PLACED CANADIAN There was sarnethii-ng strik- ingly wonkma-nilnlike a b o u t the swrarthy lvllichaud, as he took pmfifcred drinks from helpers and splashed them over his head, bathed in sweet, as he dashed along duining flhe heat of the mice. i‘Micha~ud’is was the best Cana- dian placing in the race.’ Of a five-man team from the Toronto Glad-stone Olulb, four fi-nished. B-olb Goldie placed 30th, George Nonman 35th, vor Roblb 38th and Albert Hay 49th. John Chu-rch was fonced out after 20 miles by ill- ness. Doug H-are of Ham-i~liton, form- erly of Calgary, and Sid Simiith, Burlington, Ontl, and Hamil-ton, were not listed among the official " finishers. ( The race really began to take (shape at Wellesley Square, just past the midway mark — 131/2 miles from the start. Kelley, Mihalic and Pu-likk-inen flashed past the square mun-ing almostly exactly even, with M1- chaud trailing by about 100 yards. . The runners then hi-t a long up-l grade, and‘ Kelley tried to dis-5 courage his opponents. It was prolbably there that he lost the race. Pulkkinen dropped to ‘the rear but the Yugoslav was s-hill at the Aimericaifs elbow when they topped the FNSHED EASILY It became a two-man race, and when the final gruelling hills came it was Mihalic who ‘dared Kelley to match his pace. ll/Iiihalic finished the last st-netch running with apparent case. As he brok' the tape. Boston’~s Mayor John B. Hynes crowned him with a laurel wreath and overjoyed countriymuen covered his head with leisuses. There were t~he1':heart-tu-gging things in the Marathon. Consider how Montreal's Gun- .n.ar Waihllberg crossed the (fin-ish line with a brave smile, then crept away to a quiet place and whimpered in agony, in the grip of an exc-1*-u-ciasting leg cramp. Take the case of Toronto's Al- bert Hay, who is 40 and ran his -first Man-athon.
