Father Macleod Celebrates His First | { /SAD DEATH AT SUMMERSIDE James Houghton Takes! SHOT HIMSELF WITH A REVOL- VER LAST NIGHT Inquest Being Held To-Day -Synopis of Evidence About eight o'clock las: evening, Mr. James Houghton, Campbell Hotel, Puicide by Houghton proprietor of the Summerside, committed himself, Mr. some shooting from years ago, and was wei) known through- came California out the province. The tragedy was a great shock to the community aud much sympathy isexpresssed for his wife and family. An inquest was held at Summerside this morning by Robt. 8S. Bowness, Coroner, and the following jury: W H Barnard, foreman, Robt L Rowcke, Char, D Strong, Keaneth E!lis, Joan 4 McKay, John Matheson, Daniel McNeill. Proceeding first to the Campbell the evidence of the dead man’s was taken as follows : Mre Houghton,(sworn)—I am the widow of the deceased. For the past six weeks he had been a teetotaler but on Sunday I noticed he had been drinking. Since then he has been acting strangely. His Hotel widow, | offerei at auction mind appeared to be deranged and ie ate Ne nothing. He seemed (o be suffering remorse | for bavivg returned to drinking. I be- ' lieve he was out of bis mind for the past two daye. On Monday night he went to bed fairly early, but woke up euddenly and asked me if I did not see the mwa in | the room trying todrown him. I tried to soothe him and afier a while tic fell asleep. | In the morning be eaid he was all right | and started to dress himeelt, then came | down stairs. I tried to prevent his going out but ke went to Jack Croke’s. He came back at dinner time looking ter- tibly bad and with a fearful look upon his face as if be had maie up his mind to do something desperate. He ate no dinn'1 but slept sbout two hours He then wert buck w Jack Croke’s and stayed ‘here al | atternoon. He returned between seven and eight o'clock and eat down on tne Jower step of the stair leading tothe third storey. He picked up the little baby and asked it for a kies. The child refused and he said “Won't you give poor old Jimmie a kiss for the last time.” Ai this time I was tarning on the electric light ion the ball eight feet away from him. I heard the crack of a revolver and saw him fall sideways. I aever knew him to carry a revolver and did not know he bad one. I am strongly of the opinion that bis mind was de- ranged. The inquest was then adjourned to the Board of [rade rooms, where a numoper of i } oiher witnesses were examined: They tesiified tO heariug the ehot fired aud to eeeing the deceased after the wound bad been inflcteo, Dr. McPhail exammed the wound shortly , after the act had been committed and testified that when be «rrived he bad found deceased lying on the floor. Breathing bad cease, but the pulse beat for a litt'e while. Harry Fraser,a c'erk at D.
