Mr. Lefurgey and Mr. McQuarrie address the electors of Cape Traveree and Centreville today and this evening, and the campaign is going on well for the Opposition candidate. “ero SKATING ON THE POND. pear 4 i +> i 7 } i 4 : é i es € THE DAILY BXAMINER|*™*"*" “ota con RAILWAY OFFICIALS Tau Patriot, of Thursday, referred to Tue Examiner’s statement concerning coal importations for railway officials, etc., and rays: «¢ The railway coal is imported from the Dominioo Coal Compaoy. The Char- lottetown railway employes clubbed and imported their coal from the same com-~ pany, thus getting it considerably cheaper than it could have been bought in the city, but not so cheap as it is purchased by the railway. The transaction had no connec~ tion whatever with railway Lusinese, and the employes, be they Liberal or Conser~ vative, were at liberty to buy their coal where they ¢hose. The coal was landed at the railway wharf. The Chief Account~ ant informs the Patriot that the regular wharfage was paid by the men, thus io- creasing the revenue to the railway.” According to this statement the transac tion was a legitimate one,—such as acy Government Poxp was fit to ekate on resterday afternoon—the first time this sea~ n; and the Pond was at once the centre ». all our small boys’ and «ll our big boys’ colicitude. Though hard upon onr local coal dealers, it is not of the kind, s0 common in these days, by means of which politi- cians in Parliament and cfilcials in office uee their public positions to promote their private ends. This was the point brought out by Tue Examiner. The information upon which we based our statement in the first ; lace was obtained from good sources, But as we have not received a contradic-~ tion of the Patriot’s statement, we must conclude that a mistake was made: and we therefore withdraw that part of Tar Examiner's article to which the Pa'riot refers, a ADDITIONAL EXPENDITURE Cause for the great additional expendi tures of the Laurier-Tarte adminstraiion is notto be found in any great pul l'cepterprise such as the Pac.fic Railway or Fast At. deals as that made with the Dominion Railway lantic service. The 25 per cent preferential, in favor of Britith goods alone brings a blessing home straight to every fireside. ” The Patriot forgets to say that before giving a preference of 25 per cent, of the duty to British goode, the Liberals added from 24 to 5 per ‘cent, upoa the value of the goods to the Customs tariff upon articles which we import,—chiefly from Great Britain, The Minister of Finance, if correctly reported, forgot to mention this important point. This is the reason why merchants importing and selling British goods are unable to make any reduction in price, and why the scale of taxes ie, notwithstanding, the preference of which somucb has been said, practi- cally ss high as ever. The prices paid by the people have not been reduced, they have been increased, as a result of Libera’ tariff changes; and therefore the taxes have been increased and the burden of taxation is higherthan ever. The Tartr— Laurier administration is taking millions of dollars a year more out of the pockets of the people than the Conservatives did, The Patriot and the Minister of Finance won'd like to divert the peoples’ attention from this fact. It is to be hoped thet they will not be successful in doing so. <= Wow Opened The Large Double Store The Morris.
