Tue Washington Bureau of Statistics puts tie foreign trade of the United States last year at $1,156,220,000, or an increase over 1877 of $24,300,000. In round numbers this increase was made up of $12,400,000 in exports and $8,800,000 in imports, The exports ex- ceeded the,imports by $265,000,000, or about $7,000,000 more than in 1877. Aug. 9—6i Srecrerary Evarts has sent Capt, Batson, Collector of Gloucester, Mass., to Prince Ed- ward Island for the purpose of obtaining in- formation for the Department regarding the fisheries. His instructions are specitic as to the character of the information sought. Capt. Babson will be taken on board the ‘‘ Kear- sarge” and cruise among the fisheries about a month. Information is desired for the perpose of opening correspondence with the British Government on the fishery question—Mon. Caztte. At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court thi® forenoon, Frederick LePage was fined five dollars and costs for digging holes alongside his premises on Sydney Street, and leaving them in a dangerous condition. Clement Benoit was fined $1 and costs for emptying beef pickle on the public thoroughfare. Jas. Norton was fined five cents and costs for as- saulting Francis Hermans; and H. Hennessy was fined $4 and costs, for being drunk and incapable. E. G. P., with assaulting the infant children of the late Lawrence Morris. Clemens (Mark Twain), who has been living a busy retired life in Paris for the last four months, left Paris last mopth for Belgium and Holland, en route for England, where he is the expected guest at one of the magnificent country seats. Clemens will gail with his family for America about the first of September, and immediately on his arrival home will give his attention to the publicatton of a new book he has written during this last visit to Europe, the ilustra- tions for which have been designed by Walter F. Brown, in Paris, under the supervision of the author. On Wednesday a man named Wynett Wil- liams, in crossing in a canoe from the mouth of the Keswick to Sugar Island, nine miles above Fredericton, in company with a lad, 14 years of age, to make hay, was drowned. Nothing was known about the accident until about half an hour after it occurred, when the lad was found on the Keswick shore almost insensible. for the accident and only remembers the canoe upsetting, a terrible struggle, and after that he is unconscions of what happened till found on the shore. THE greatest railroad in the werld is the London and Northwestern, connecting London with Liverpool and Manchester. It has a capital of about $240,000,000 and an income of about $35,000,000; owns 1,100 locomotives, and at its great workshops at Crewe employs 6,500 workmen. The main line has three and four tracks, and with its branches it hasa total length of 2,200 miles.
