Work will be re- sumed on the outside of the building ina few days. A pispatcH from Arichat reports that the brigt. Archibald, Captain Mustard, from Europe in ballast, bound to Georgetown, P. E. L., has been ice-bound since the 3rd inst. The steamer Valetta, of Allan line, Capt. Anderson, from St. John, N. B., for Mon- treal, put in here this morning short of coal, unable to reach Cow Bay on account of ice off Sceatterie. A Wuyytree special of the 15th says that a murder was committed there last night. Daniel Bell, a waiter on the steamer Mani- toba, was shot on one of the streets by G. Gribbon. The cause was a quarrel ina house of ill-fame. Gribbon was formerly convicted of rape at Thunder Bay, and sen- tencei to fourteen years, but was liberated at the expiration of three years’ imprison- ment. Tue prize eattle butchered by Messrs. Blake Bros., for the Easter market, attract a great many persons to inspect gthem. They have been butchered in first class style, and at present present a very tasteful . The Commissioners of the Paris Exhibition have ordered a photograph and’two choice pieces of the prize cow. They will be sent to the Exhibition as a picture and samples of Island stock. Tue steamships of the Allan Line will, on and after Saturday, 11th May, be de- spatched from Quebec, and will cease call- ing at Halifax, but will call at Rimouski, on the St. Lawrence, to embark and disem- bark the Canadian mails. Messrs. Allan have made arrangements to give cabin Ps - sengers the option, when purchasing their tickets of didlsistinig or disembarking at Point Levi or at Rimouski, which will re- sult in a saving of at least twelve or fifteen hours. In the event of Rimouski being made the point, the cost of transport from Point Levi to Rimouski and vice versa will be borne by the Allan Line. _<—2_eee A Gigantic Thames Bridge. At a meeting of the Metropolitan Board of Works, the Works Committee reported on the subject of a new bridge over the Thames, sub- mitting a report by the engineer, Sir J. W. ette. Mr. Roche, in moving the adop- tion of the report, said the Committee recom- mended the construction of a one-span bridge from a spot between St. Catherine's Dock and the Tower on the north of Horseleydown Lane on the south. The s would be one of 850 feet, and thus the traffic up to London Bridge would not be interfered with. The height would be 65 feet. The bridge would be the largest of the kind in the world. It is thought probable that Friday’s scene in Parliament during the discussion of O’Donnell’s motion, declaring the Govern- ment’s action in regard to Lord Leitrim’s murder was unconstitutional, will lead to a split in the Home Rule party. Several Irish members indignantly repudiated at tacks of O’Donnell and Parnell on the late Lord. The episode has created much bit- ter feeling.
