(epeem To The Guudiln) Lest Wednesday evening I had the pleasure of attending Henry McCullochs annual lobster dinner. This ls the twelfth dinner Henry hes put on since he became a member of the House of Commons. He represents Piotou County and has represented that constituency since 1935. These annual lobster dinners are regarded as somewhat of an institution in Ottawa. Over one-hundred guests attend, in- eluding Cabinet Ministers, mem- bers of the House of Commons, and the Senate. Senior civil servants and House of Commons officials. It was the last Wednesday on which‘ the House did not sit for commencing on Wednesday even- ing of this week the House will sit through until eleven the same as on the other days. - - e - Lest year and more particularly the year before considerable dil- fioulty and annoyance were caused both to the department officials and the growers of potatoes due to late applications for inspection. The last day which applications will be received ls June 15th. in fact most applications should be in before this. Early applications per- mit the arrangement of the in- spections to the best advantage. Application forms \viil be senl to all growers whose crops were m- spected in 1947. as well as to those who have made a special request for inspection to the local inspec- tor. 1 should hope that after the ex- perience of last year and the year before growers desiring inspection would get their applications filed in time. 1 O 0 O O I had s. very pleasant call last week from Fred Skerry. formerly ofll/ot Eleven, but now of Ottawa. Fred has been sick for the last two years; but 1 am pleased to note that he is making a rapid re- covery and expec‘; to be back to his auditing in a couple of mouths. O l I O When Parliament opened yester~ day very touching tributes were paid to the memory of the late Colonel Ralston. The Prime Min-. lster in his tribute said: “l shew’ Colonel Balaton intimately and s more unselfish and self-sacrificing public servant I have nevi IRWI- I cannot recall anyone of my oe- quaintonces who seemed to be more industrious, more conscien- tious or more ready to sacrifice everything for duty, as he saw it. than Colonel Ralston." John T. Hackett, KC, member for Stan- stead, President of the Canadian Bar Association concluded his iri- bute as follows: “He suffered the fortune and the fate of those en- gaged in_the endless adventure of governing men-no more, no less. Raiston understood. He did not complain. He considered it a priv- ilege to have given of his best in field and forum to public service of his country. when this came to an end he returned to his briefs not sad and dejected, but lighthearted and joyous. l-ie had done his duty. he had retained his ideals, he had kept his friends. "To live in the hearts we leave behind ' "Is not in die." I I O I Today 1 went w Montreal in at- tend Colonel Ralstons funeral. A very simple but impresive service was held in the First Baptist Church, the church in which Col- onel Ralston worshipped since he first came to Montreal. The church was full of dignitaries from all walks of life who came to pay U181!’ last respects to a great soldier, s great statesman and a great Jurist. The service was conducted by the Rev. M. F‘. McCutcheon. The cnoir and congregation sang two oi the late Colonel Raistons favorite hymns “The Sands of Time are Sinking‘ and “Lead Kindly Light"? As the body left the church the choir mtoned the Nunc DImlOi/JS? "Lord now lettest Thou Thy eer- vant depart in peace."
