PROFESSIONALISM It is currently reported that an en- deavour is being made among an, ele- ment of the sporting fraternity to organize professional hockey here. This is undoubtedly a matter of the utmost importance to the Amateur Clubs of the city and steps should be taken by the combined clubs to oiisct any movement that would in the slightest degree interfere with the splendid standing amateur sport has ever held in this Province.. In a city of this size not hockey a10u€ would feel the loss to the amateur ranks of any of the players, but all the other games including football, baseball, basket-ball, etc., and cer- tainly if profesirlonalism is to jeop- nrdise amateur sport to any extent, we are much better on without it. Judging from the results of profes- sionalism the past three or four years, as practiced in the neiglfrioring Provinces, amateur sport in all its branches is a great deal more de- sirable. q:a»2¢¢:oQoo;o¢:n:»:»§¢~:o»;~¢:»:»:»;»;»¢:¢o:oozcbozuza § iioiet uiiiiviis wo+ooo<»-:»»:»-»:~:.»>-woooow VICTORIA H. Women in London have begun to wear trousers and little smoking coats instead of a tes! gown. The fashion has been in vogue for some time in Pairis and there has been much discussed as to whether Eng- lish women would adopt it. _ Every kind of waistcoat is being worn out of doors,_ but the trousers and coat suit’ is only worn indoors, and generally in the afternoon. Many suits consisting of a loose smoking jacket, similar in cut to the pyjama jacket, but of diflerent mat- erial, have already been seen in Lon- don. Tho suits and trousers resemble closely the jacket and trousers of the Chinese woman. . i A coat.seen in a West end shop yesterday, was of _deep blue cush- mere, with a collar of yellow silk und a breast pocket, the whole be- ing stitched in yellow.
