lar Poet Laureate in Great Britain.
He once swept the floor in ii. New
York saloon, and sailed the Seven
Seas for years in windjammcrs, so
that he does not put on any unnec-
essary airs now that success has
come to him.
He was up in Edinburgh recently,
speaking to the learned folk of that
city on narrative poetry. Big
he amused them by reading what he
called a traditional Egyptian story.
It was a runny one, and made every-
body laugh. Only a. few of the people
woo heard it knew, however, that lil
was an translation of a poem that
Dr. Mascfleld had written the night
before! Poet Laureates must have
eir little jokes.
He told a good story ln Edinburgh,
to illustrate the need of simplicity
