day moming that his high hopes
when he left Pembroke cliapel in Liv-
trpool four years ago to come to this
city had turned to ashes and that
unless some member of his congrega-
tion coiild give him a reason why he
should remain pastor of the church
here he will accept a call from the
First Congregational church of San
Francisco. The final decision, he said,
must be made within tivo weeks. The
failure of his plans for a big institu-
tional church and his present "mea-
gre ministry" were set out in his
ststeineiit_ He can discover only res-
sons why he should go. "rio far. as
we can see today there is no future
for this church and for my ministry,"
he said.
A special meeting of the trustees
will be held within a day or two and
the' men responsible for the tinancial
management of the church will look
for a "reason" cogent enough to re-
tain their pastor. "We all agree that
Dr. Aked is the linest preacher in
New York," said Trustee Frank L.
Froment, "and we will make another
effort to satisfy his ambitions. Whe-
ther or not we can build the grand
church he desires niiist depend on the
support of the congregation."
"l don't think we will build a Fifth
avenue church," said one of the trus-
tees after the service. "It would cost
about $2,000,000, and \"e have a lot
of hard-headed citizens on our hoard
of trustees. It would surprise vou to
know what competent business uien
compose our board; and we don't
think Dr. Aked is worth the risk. He
has been sick three times in the four
years that he has been over here.
First, there was that fear that he
was consumptive, and he had to go
to the Swiss Mountains. The first
year that he was here he had gall
stones, and lust year he had typhoid.
