The way of the people in elections is
sometimes strange as the wav of a sen out

majority.
After the bye-cisctiun In St, John the
Liberal press and puny tuck comfort in
the thought that “all the countrvis ln
sympathy und accord with Laumer," ascnr-

shall have the Conservative organs equal-
ly auto that the rcsnll in London sounds
the death knsll of the Govarnment.In our
humble judgment the results in both
Saint John and London are ox-
ceptlonal, and may fairly be
taken to balance each other. Saint John
wanted astrong representative at Otta-
wa, lor the benefit of St. John, and found
her man in Dr. Puosley. Party had but
little to do with the result there. Lon-
don was dlsrruated with the past record oi
political corruption and dehauchery there.
Thlswas so apparent that the Liberal
party abandoned thc scat, just as the
Conservatives in St. John for an entirely
different reason absndonad the scat there.
There is still a very large Conservative
electorate in Saint Johnand a very large
Liberal olcctoratein London, and these
elements will be apparent al the general
election when it comes. _Tha respective
merits oi' Laurier and Borden, or of the
Liberal and Conservative pax-t‘_cs and
policies had litslc todo with tho by-also
tion in the two citica. Wa arc therefore
disposed to odael one against the
other, and conclude that the country
has so far given no clear indication of any
coming change lin its support. The
Government is yet very stroug‘y in-
trcuched. espceiallyin Quebec and Novo
Scotia. There ara some indications,
perhaps. that Quebec is not quits so
solidly Liberal as it wus, and this may
mean much, or it may mcaa little. The
whole country has not 'yet made up its
mind fora change, certainly not in any
such way as in 1573, in 1878, or even as in
the rather hesirant fashion of 1806.
As to London,lt is claimed by some of
the Liberal crnana that the sole reason for
not contesting the scat at present was the
desire to await lr. Hyman's return. Most
persons at this distance regard it as very
improbable that llr. Hyman will ever
again ba a usudidatc in London.
