All that time she was at- tended to by her devoted husband, but almost daily assisted by the Chrlstllke ministry of two of his nieces, Mrs. C. K. These practical Cllristicn ladies did much to allev- iate Mrs. Nicholson‘s suilerings, prolong her life under God‘s hand, as wcll ns make the hard lot of their uncle vastly easier for him in many ways. Mrs. Nicholson was a gentle soul, a timid but genuine Christlcn,~ pleading the power and blessing of God with re- newed eugemess dolly, indeed many times daily, as long as life lasted. Reid. in Northern Ltlcsl elf gcrt i There is a very poplllgtr theory just now afloat in the world, that fear is an evil tiling and ought to be banished from ihe heart of man. On the other hand, _the Blblc tells 'us in more than one place, that "The fear of the Lord is the be- ginning of wisdom." Are these Bible-statements outgrown, or can we justify them in the light of mo- dern knowledge? The Oriental believes that wisdom is a gift from God and can only be attained by his favor. The Hebrew Scriptures accepi. this view, but where other pepole sought the fa- vor of God by means of charms, incantations, midnight musings on the stars, or through- pure favorit- lsm, these writers substitute for the magical, the ethical means. They teach that obedience to God is the way to his favor, and from this teaching grew the proverb-“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of ., ' ,l,,,,. -» . `».~ rift’ |;'i:"-uf .I \'\".‘-"~' !it“‘;\i'_\‘ i~\~, ~ lu.: mv; been sulp:-fred, the Old Testament sings the prais- es of Wisdom, and the world can well afford to preserve diese writ- ings for their beauty alone. But. over and beyond this, as wc :cad these majestic apostrophes to Wis- dom, we of this modem day are led to see that they tell us just what the scientists of today are saying. Not that the scientists speak of God! With a few notable excep'i0ns they seem very shy about using that word. Bug what the scientists cnll_ "The Final Cause," “Natural Law," or "Ultimate Reality," plain folks, like the Hebrew writers call "God," So that it may fairly be said that science of our time is re- inforcing the old Hebrew proverb, using modern terms, and telling us. "The fear of Natural Low is the beginning of wisdom." That is to say. science is teaching us in these times, as never before. that man may not safely follow ways of his own devising, but that if he is to attain to wisdom and achieve progress in any line, he can ‘only do so by conforming to the principles of physics, of chemistry' onwhotever line of_activlt/y he may choose. The principles of mathema-_ tlca which enter so largely into our engineering enterprises, the laws of tensile strength, of chemical com- bination-these are not things of mltn's invention, but of his discov- ery, The Qld astrologers studied the stars, charted the heavens, even calculated with considerable swu- raey me movements of sun and moon and planets. Yet they never gained any true knowledge of the hcxwens just because they conduct- ed their studies with preconceived notions as to tin. relation between the heavenly bodies and the earth and mlm. Abram did not trnve-i to Canaan by automobile or ail‘pl'lne, llecnllse men had not yet leamed to mink Gods thoughts in the realms of locomotion and me- chanics.
