In Prairie Provinces WINNIPIJG. May 23 Cool backward weather. accompanied by widespread rainfall and snow at a number of points, has re- tarded spring seeding in the three prairie provinces. Warm dry weather is required in practical- ly all areas to permit seeding pro- gress within the normal dates of seeding. according to the weekly crop report of the Department of Agriculture of the Canadian Na- tional Railways. Little headway has been made in Manitoba to date. The flood in the Red River Valley will scri- ously curtail seeding of all crops in that section. with a s20.000.0U0 crop loss estimated for the cur- rent season. Other points in Southern Manitoba indicate a pos- sible whcat decrease of 10 per cent to 15 per cent, with possible increase in oats. barley and flax. Seeding in these sections will not be general until May '2-llh. Weather was cool in Northern Manitoba. with practically all soc- Lions having light rains or show- crs. Pres pending about May 15th, but backward weather haapermlttad little pro- grees. From 5 to 30 per cent of wheat seeding is completed. de- on location. Moisture conditions generally are good in this area, with snow and rain oc- curring in recent days. Gran- hoppers hatching is delayed. but heavy infestations are expected over a large area of Saskatchewan. Wheat seeding in Central Sas- katchewan la 25 per cent com- pleted. Surface moisture is gen- erally satisfactory for germina- tion, But little reserve moisture is available and crop prospects will be dependent upon timely rains during the growing season. Conditions in most areas are con- siderod favorable for the present. with the exception of the very late seeding. Seeding l5 progressing satisfac- torily in Northern Saskatchewan, varying from 25 per cent. in eastern territory to 80 per cent in western sections. A start has also been made on coarse grains in this area. and early sown wheat is showing above ground at I few points. Warm weather is requir- ed over this division and rain: will be required in the western sections upon completion of seeding. Late Season East and northeast of Calgary wheat seeding varies from 10 per ceni to 80 per cent completed, the season being from 10 days to three weeks late. Moisture con- ditions are generally below nor- mal and good rains will be re- quired to ensure even germina- tion. Heavy rains occurred in the east end of the Oyen Sub Division. with seeding five to 75 per cent completed. Weather generally has been cloudy. cool and windy. The moisture situation in the Red Deer sub division is very acute. From Edmonton East, seeding varies from 30 per cent to 70 per cent completed with most points re- porting both surface and subsoil moisture deteriorating rapidly. High winds and dust storms have caused some drifting between Bigger and Wainwright but dam- age is not yet ascertainable. Thirty five per cent of wheat and 15 per cent of coarse grains have been sown in the Athabasca subdivision. where weather has continued cold and the top soil is getting dry. Rains and warm weather will soon be required in this area. Peace River Area Scattered showers occurred in the Peace River where weather previously has been warm and dry. Seeding is general, with 30 per cent wheat completed and seeding of coarse grains com- menced. Moisture is fair and sub- soil moisture good. With walm weather. there should be early germination. Weather was warm in the Okanagan where creeks are rising but are not yet up to flood stage. There will be no cherries. apricots or peaches at Kelowna or North. while between Penticton and Osoyoos cherries will be & per cent. apricots l0 per cent and peaches 15' per cent crops.
