Fiftylflvemembers of-the crew were exhailsbed from fighting the flames and controlling the terror-stricken passengers. ' The vessel' was convoyed by the steamer President which had been hurried to the rcscue in response to frantic calls sent out by the wireless operator aboard the Queen. ITALY TII MAKE IIEIAIINSTIIATIIIN ' .AIIAIAST TIIIIIITY ik I ` ROME; Jan. 24-Considerable ex- citement has been caused by the de- parture of the battleship Pisa for Elfylit and the order just issued to tile battleships Ban Giorgio and San Marco to hold themselves in readi- ness to sail at any moment. lt is believed that this'is the fore- runner of an Italian naval demon- stration against Turkey as the out- come of a series of incidents which likely has somewhat upset the friend- ly relations between the two coun- tries. One of the incidents was the de- tention last October of an Italian vessel by a Turkish gunboat near the port of Heoida, Arabia. On that oc- vzislon the Italian government made ii vigorous protest against the ac- iioii of Turkey. There is a feeling here that -the "Young Turks" desir- iins of demonstrating their national- ism to their supporters picked upon italy as the safest country to annoy. FIRE IN IIDLD OF MANCHESTER SHIPPER ST. JOHN, Jan. 24-Fire was dis- covered in the hold of the steamer llsnchestcr Shipper lying at dock No. 6 this morning. The vessel` brought 600 bales of cotton from Philadelphia for local mills and_ about 200 bales still remained _on board. Spontaneous combustion is given as the cause of the fire. Three streams of water were turned into the hold and the fire was extinguish- ed before noon. It will not be pos- sible to ascertain the exact damage until after the cotton is overhauled at the mills, but it is believed the damage will amount to about $4.000. About 200 bales of cotton were in ilic vicinity of cnc names. and mush oi this was either destroyed or more nr less damaged. The llrst witnesl yesterday against Miner was Ferguson who denied al- most fn detail the whole of Minef"a story. He denied meeting Miner at the station on the night he returned from Halifax following the fire; he denied that he telephoned from Hali- fax and he further denied that he had told the clerk of the Ainlici-st Hotel to send Miner to his room. His evidence was flatly contradict- ed by Mr. Burke, night clerk of the hotel, who swore that Miner- mot Fergllson at the station on thc night he returned from Hsiifnz.
