This isa startling state- arrival we car sel] you boots of good qual-- ment to make; but it is nevertheless true | These millions of acres of the finest land in thie country ere ceatrolled, ruled and ; managed absolutely by the English nobility as if they were located in the British Isles. The peers and peeresses of Great Britain do not covfise their landed estates to the rea'm-of the Union Jack, but they have reached out their hands and ap propriated these many millions of acres beneath the Stars and Stripes. —The Liberal method of cutting down expenditure is described as fullows by the Montreal Star. “The financial statement tor the last fiscal y ar shows that the Gov- ernment collected over forty millions from the people and spent over forty-four millions. This is being represented to us us by the Liberal preseas a great achieves ment. It certainly is, in the way of repu- diated pledges. and a cheerful abandon- ment of cherished principles. This Liberal Government, when it came in, was to lighten the taxation on the people and to put a stop to these wicked Tory increases in the national expenditure. The above figures show the largest revenue on record aud the greatest total expenditure since the old C. P. Took Poison and Kept a Dairy of His Suiferings. Kansas City, Mo, Sept 17.—The body of Faed Langsdorf, aged 46, a bookbinder and spiritual'st,has been found on the bank of Kaw, ata point near Armourdale, Kan- sas. He had committed suicide after tak~ | ing & drachm of morphine, and adrachm of prussic acid, in small quantities covering @ period of four days, then opers ingthe veins of his arm. Langedorf’s suicide was a most wonderful show of nerve and determination. An ante mortem statement of the suicide, found in a little note book beside the body, toid how he had on Wednesday, September 7, between two and three in the afternoon taken several grains of morphine and sat down under a tree to await death. In the note book is given & minute account of his feelings after swallowing the drug, and his happiness at being so near the “otber side,” which he caloly dilates upon. Thursday a notation tells of the anicide’s regret and wonder at the pvison not having taken effect, and of the increased dose which be has taken. A line or two on Friday shows his regret at his inability to kill himself and of more poison taken. On Saturday he nas, he says, taken 30 graine of morphine and 60 grains of prus~ sic acid, and this amount of poisou having failed to do its work, he will open a vein of his arm with a book-~binder’s cutting tool which he had. There the writing ended. When Langsdorf’s body was found, everything indicated that he had gone through what his ghastly diary related. - =e e@2—— -— ——-- SHIP NEWS Port of Charlottetown.
