They have the idea that it will lbs a small and unimportant aflair the straits once a day by any old route in a sort of slow-coach fash- ion. The sooner they get rid of these notions the better for them- selves and for all concerned. Consider for a moment some of ,the possibilities of the potato trade, alone. Aroostook County in the State of Maine in the year 1908 produced 20,000,000 bushels of potatoes on 70,- 000 acres of land. Our 'own Province has produced as mach as 7,011,000 bushels on 43,000 acres. Ours was the smaller yield of the two, hut po- tato culture has been developed tot degree of remarkable productiveness in Maine, by the use of fcrtiliscrs and the yield brought up to an aver- age of 275 bushels per acre. But the Aroostook land is not na- .WHAT A CAR FERRY MEANS T0 THIS VPROVINOE. and if the entire export crop should oe shipped in that time, it follows that 50,000 bushels must, cross the straits daily. That would -be 101 minimum carloads, or sufficient ti load the ferry steambr with sixteen cars for two, and seventeen cars for four trips, making six.round ‘trips during every. day of the shipping pg riod for potatoes. We have balm speaking of possibili ties. Some doubter may rise to.re mark that what is possible may noe be probable. All such would do wel to bear in mind that our Province has other crops besides potatoei which would make demands upon th. Ferry. There is. hay, millions o bushels of oats and turnips to bi provided for, to say nothing of livc stock, fish, dairy products, meats, poultry, eggs, etc., so far left alto _:ether out of account. If the potat( rrous, these other products must be taken care of in some way. It follows .that during thc busy season ofishipment at least, not one, two, or three round trips will be rc- quircd to bc made hy thc Ferry, but -_turally more fertile than our Island soil, nor so well adapted to thi growth of potatoes on a large scale Given a market, and the market ii 'coming in the Canadian West, an< elsewhere, and our farmers could wel devote 50,000 acres .to the potati lcrop, and produce thereon, with skil ful cultivation, a crop at the rate o' 300 bushels per acre. That would make s, total of 15,000,000 bushels. Experienced potato growers assure, us that it would he easily possible to produce more than twice the quantiti ever yet grown here. Aroostook has shown what can be done. Lct us assume that with a potato crop of fifteen million bushels five imillion bushels would be required for homo: consumption and for seed, leav- ,ing ten million bushels for exporta- tion. That would mean 20,000 mini- mum carloada of 500 bushels each, 0r'i10,000 maximum carloads of 1,000 bushels each. _The 7sedso'n ‘of ' ship- mcntfor potatoes may be set down that five or six round trips daily will ie an absolute- necessity in the not distant future, and must be provided or. And, it follows from this again ‘hat the Ferry route must he as short as can possibly be secured. On .my but the shortest route the busi- ness cannot be done. Logic, common .ense and reason all point to this _conclusion as inevitable. The grow- ing time for Prince Edward Island and for the Maritime Provinces ii now coming, is near at hand and must be prepared for. The East is coming to its own. Calculations based upon the doin“'gs of the old days of stagnation will_» not do for the future. ' ` The men who figure upon one tri] a day for the Car Ferry belong to e past age. This is the age of progress' of swift movement and rapid devel- opment. Thc Ferry, if it is to be worthy of the namc must make quick and frequent trins and the mass' of . __ I _' _ 'at` two hundred days in the year, lI:0gl‘€f=Si\'€ Bud up-to-dnte people will bc satisfied with nothing less. As was generally expected, th., Government of Sir Lomer Gouin was sustained by the Quebec electorate in the elections of Wednesday last, His majority is little changed from what it was before and is quite as large as the interests of efllcent adminis- tration can require. Therc seems no good reason to' suppose that thc Opposition lender, Mr. Tcllicr, had he succedcd in thc election, would have done any better, if so well.
