WILL THE EDUCATI OTTAWA (CUP) Students are tackling some crucial questions as the ~ country prepares for the first-ever comprehensive fo- rum on post-secondary ed- ucation in: Canada, to be held in Saskatoon October 25 to 28 Who decides. what is discussed? Will students be out-numbered and ignored? Will. industry take control of our education system? Why should we spend hun- dreds of thousands of dol- lars on one conference in Saskatoon? Will it change anything? The forty-four member. organizing committee met. in Ottawa last week to ham- mer out the vision of this forum, which will bring to-. gether two levels of gov- ernment, the business sec- tor, non-government orga- nizations, academics. ad- ministrators, and students to discuss the future direc- - tion of higher education in Canada. “We don’t expect all of | these groups to reach con- sensus. We just want them to eyeball each, other, to look each other in the eye - and hear what the other has to. say,” said Forum Chair. Dr: Brian Segal. “If we tried to reach a’ consensus it would just collapse into voting strategies.” But students are ques- tioning the effectiveness of an open. discussion ap- proach. “The forum has not been given any mandate to come to a censensus (on action). ©In my opinion, we've talked long enough, said Royden Trainor, chair of the Students’ Union of Nova ' Scotia. : Though administrators are generally more opti- mistic about the Forum, Dr. Charles Pascal, Chair of the Council of Regents, which © governs Ontario’s colleges, cerns. “If there is one thing that nags me (about the Fo- rum), it’s that we will all ask ourselves in the airport going home from Saska- toon: ‘so what?’,” he said. “We're not perfect and we have to look at the sys- tem critically,” said Forum Chair Dr. Brian. Segal. “But we are not going to spend two and a half days admits some con- in Saskatoon looking at how bad. we are. “We have to stop look- ing eh, at the future through the rear- view mirror,” cal. “We can’t go into this thing looking at: how to pro- tect what we have now.” Pascal said colleges are not worried about more private sector involvement. “Any universities that. fear participation with the pri- “vate sec asia Id he dain- aging to sete by research’ rs ec ‘an ux lere are are insect b dangers, | thi ties) are }i no Ar Pei and theyv¢ ant aga st , Ss Renee si them.” 9 rs i “A $e ee _ And th iWGsee 3 resentati y Cf tee claim ey < re intereste Pie Sie ning their dents willy living an ds an Le tor) is int@ iron _ sure the é¢ is relevant: re ers are IGE we said Jill Bodkir Diy wahier chair of the B.C. “S ewirh ies Com- mission. pens gm Business sec- ain making O1 system =There is a growing be- -liefon the part of the Cana- dian business community that the corporate sector and the government will be cooperating more to pro- vide the necessary funds required to make _ post- secondary education avail- able to students, and espe- cially to provide continuing education,” she said. echoes: Pas- © _ represented | ' than ten per) wens ae the ae 3 os Sty myth he given athe oe is by the.
