THE REPUBLICANS’ CHOICE.
President McKinley has formally ac-
cepted the Republican nomination for the
Presidency of the United States by the
issue of the letter of acceptance. The
Democratic press in commenting upon it
says that it is_by fur the ablest utterance
that has come from the Republican party
for many years. “lt is dignilled; it is dull
only where recitals of statistics and of-
ficial documents make dullness unavoid-
able; it is plausable throughout and at
times convincing: it is as adroit in its
omissions as in its presentations of
diflicu points that could not be over-
lookeihi
On the other hand the supporters of Mc-
Kinley think that no one can question its
fairness in the special emphasis upon
sound currency and contends that it
compares effectively the _positign of the
two parties of the Union on that subject
much to the disadvantage of theopposing
one.
The second important feature is a de-
claration ofhis policy in the Philippines,
which is perhaps the one of the most
general interest to the world at large. The
