The itreat dam at Assouan, ‘the first
cataract of the Nile, has been completed-»
the most stupendous engineering work of
the kind the world ever saw. It cost ten
millions otdollars and has been completed
within two years, which seems a very

control the Nile lioods, to which Egypt
owes its fertility, and to afford the means
ot irrigating vast tracts that are now for
