' Perhaps the most interesting events in my life thus far are these: (1) That I came into the world without benefit of doctor. (2) That no clergyman has yet pushed me under water or sprink- led it on my dome. And because I've neither been sprinkled nor submerged, some folk say I'm a heathen. Well, maybe I am. Maybe not. Anyway, I'm satisfied to leave that in the hands of the good Lord while I set my hand to other tasks. I do know, though, that I came into the world with lots of con- stitution, plus longevity on moth- er's side of the house. My great- great aunt Kitty lived-well, no- body knows how long she lived. Anyway, she got so old and feeble that tradition says she had to be clone away with and that's that. Besides being long-long livers, mother's folk had itchy .feet and big families. They scattered about CROWELL. almost as like autumn leaves, married, and brought up their offsprlngs under many flags- as the United Nations now boast. Take Uncle John's kids for ex- ample: they numbered etxteeen, of whom five were born under as many flags. It was great fun to hear Uncle John introducing his IOYEISH kids to other people. "Jean was born in Cuba. Irene, over there, was born in Box. ton. That makes Irene one of Uncle Samls girls, ey? Come here, Fred, and meet the strangers. Just where were you born, Freddie? Oh yes, now I have it. You see, Fred Came EIOHE when me and the mlssues were in England, and Donald is a Mexican. Yes, slree, a W11 I-Iedkbd Ereaser, ain't you, Donald? That's little Bill stand- ing there by the stove. Bill was bum In Germany. The other eleven are Canadians." Uncle John did more for the "good neighbour" policy and the "Brotherhood of Man" than any. body I have ever known. Yet ms only reward was a. six foot plot of earth in a weed-grown cemetery without. even a. crude marker to show where they planted him, Galavantlng about the world and marrying here, there, and pretty nearly everywhere, naturally sap- ped most of the good old Irlgh. But the good names d.icin't'. keep them from fighting whenever the opportunity pre- sented itself. one time they got mixed up with the police force of a small Cana- dian town and, believe it or not, moth-er's uncles did a bad job on the boys in blue. Mark, the ring- lead-er, had to flee the country till the stink died down and the officers of the law 'had time to cool off. That was the Irish side accompanying their daughter to Winnipeg where they will spend the winter months. Miss Wlnnlfred Waugh of Ste. Why they all died comparative- ly yqung I can't say, but they did, so I don't know a great deal about the family tree on Dad's side of the house. When Dad passed on he was but thirty-two. I can't ever remember having seen him because I was a mere babe. Besides he, he left a young widow and two other sons, low with two countries and that's that. (To be continued) WHEATLEY RIVER W. I.
