V — North’s pass is of particular interest, since it evinced a full aipprec-iation of South’s bid. all There are two points of interest in this deal which was played in was an open acknowledgement of hamper the opponents in their exchange of information in case too ofiten, the partner of the pre- he shouldn‘t. either from a sense of desperation because he does not fit the opener's suit, or be- cause he doesn’t realize how weak the opening bidders hand is lia- ble to be. The partner of the three bid- der is well adviseid to give up hope of a game unless he has, at the very best, better than a sound opening bid of his own. Tlhe play of the hand also con- tains an instructive point. The club lead was taken with the ace and a trump was led from dum- my. East played low, and the king won the trick, West playing the seven. A low diamond was returned, East taking the ace. Declarer c- ventually made the contract, los- ing one trick in each suit. An error was made in the de- fense. West should/have dropped either the ten or jack of dia- monds on declarer’s king. When he played the seven instead, South was left with no alterna- tive but to play back a low dia- flllfind and hope the ace would a . . But suppose West had played the ten on -the king. Declarer might then very easily have rea- soned that West’s holding origi- nally was J-10 alone. in which case the play of the queen would fell the jack and ace’ together. Two truinip tricks would then have been dost instead of one. , West gave South no chance to go wrong. 6.45-—Roving Reporter. 6.55—By—line 7.00—Music in the Evening 7.15--Wednesday Recital 7.30-—Carl Topscott Singers. 8.00—UniVersity of the Air. 8.30—-Introduction to Wednesday Night. 8.40—Three Visions of Joan. 9.30-—Joan of Arc. 11.00'—CBC National News Round- up and Midweek Review. 1.00--CBC News and Weather 1."15—‘Pages from Life 1.30—Strings and Things. 1i59—'I‘ime Signal 5:00-—Maritime Fish B’cast. Fence Strike Will . Affect CBC In Small Way "TORONTO (CP) —-The CBC said Monday it will be affected only “in a small way” by the United States~wide strike of 1,300 Columbia Broadcasting System. engineers, camenamen and other" radio and television technicians. A spokesman said the corpora- tion hadreceived no word of pro- gram , interruption fro m the American network and would take whatever filmed substitutes are used for live CBS TV shows. Non-union. and supervisory per- sonnel managed to get out most of CBS’ scheduled live shows. The strike fiorced the cancel- lation of a live one-hour drama from New York (Westinghouse Studio One) Mon-day night but CBS plnaned to fill the period with a kinescope of last week's show. The CBC said it would carry‘ the kine and would carry any others that showed up as re- placements. Radio station CFRB, a pri- vately-owned outlet in Toronto, carries certain CBS radio shows but it was not immediately known what effect the strike would have on its programming --if any.
