' \Ve shall evidently have to receive with many gains of allowanss the reports re- ceived oi the oonilota of armed forces in the far east. Take for instance the tor- pedo attack of the niiiiit oi Sth February and the general engagement of the ii eta' and forts on the 9th. This with the affair at Cnsmulpo about the same time was claimed by the Japanese to have sunk, disabled or put out of action for months to come in all four of Rusaia‘s nine battle- ships in eastern waters and ten oi her eighteen cruisers. If these reports had been true nearly or quite one half ol the Russian naval force in the east was par- alysed or destroyed. In that ease Japan’s supremacy in the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan would hav! been decisively os- taliilshed. More recent accounts of sn apparently reliable sort would go to show that the darn mes inflicted upon the Rus- sian ships at Port Arthur were neither so great nor so irrepirable as was ilrst mads to appear. Viceroy Aiexlefl' reported to his Govern- ment ori the l8'.h the full partlcniari of the lighting on the Sih and 9th, the ships eugagerl and the result. From this re- port it nppciirs that the attacking iiset conaisteil oi sixteen ships beside torpedo craft. and the Russian iieet oi five l>attie< ships and tive cruisers with dttsen tor- pedo boats. Lint it appears that in the morning battle oi the 9.h the hatlleshlps Tsarevltch and Retvisan and tho cruiser Palladn, which were reported to have bien put out of action hy torpedoes the iilghtbeiorc, look part lu the light and did good work while lying at anchor. So Viceroy Alexleii reported, and we have since the lat. r report ofthe Retvlaan having “covered herself with glory" in a battle at Port Arthur in which (our Japanese hattleships were reported to be sunk_lVVe are further informed under dats of February 18th that the repairs to the damaged ships were being rapidly made hy the aid of calssons, and that the Tssreritcii, Retvisiin and Pallada would soon be ready for sea airaln. So much ilor the damage to the Russian ships, which could not have been so serious as was Hrst re ported . ®%§ii%=>i%i fitiiitiitw Is ~1.0ood time to have furniture re- ‘ is .pairs made. Although the reported sinking oi the four flrnied after the llrst report and the story reinainedior days uncoutraoioted, there is now good reason to doubt it. What 'ook place appears to have been an s_t~ row entrance to the inner harbor oi Port Arthur by sinking old hulks in the pas- sage after the manner ol Hobsoa’s exploit at Santiago durlurr the war in Cuba.
