SOME CEMENTS OF SOCIETY This phrase, which is very sug- gestive, is from Bishop Butler. It was used by him. Society is a body of people connected by some tie. or as Butler suggests, people cemented together. What are some of these cements? I shall men- tlon four. One is Language. We know how one in a strange place likes to hear his native tongue, how he is drawn to one, be he it stranger, if he is speaking the language or his childhood. You can usually tell the Irish, Scots, English, Am- erican, and people from various parts of our own province, by the sound of their voices. To use I Bible phrase "speech betrayeth thee". People who speak the "lain. guage of Eden" are drawn to one another. Language' is one of the cements that unite the nations of the earth. CRASWILL for Better Photo- graphs. Mrs. Angus MacDonald, 205 Euston St., returned Thursday night from attending the fun- ersl of her brother in Saint John, N. B. Mrs. Annie Ferguson of Hamp- ton has returned to her home after spending A pleasant vacation at Churchill with her sister, Mrs. J. A. Macxlnnon and family. Murray Creed of the CBC staff, Halifax, who underwent an opera- tion for appendicitis on Thursday, is recovering satisfactorily in the Halifax Infirmary. For common ordinary son I rest Patriotism is another. The war showed how people love their na- tive land and are willing to sacri- fice for it. Even those who were in foreign lands felt keenly the plight of the home country. The call to fight. for one's hearth makes people, for the time at least, forget their differences and stand together. We have known young people away from home, remember the place of their youth. it may have been that they sent home money to aid in the upkeep of religion or to make pro- vision for education. Some have even founded schools and attach- ed the name of a favourite teach- er, to whom they owed much, to it. They knew that the country place where they were brought up was becoming depleted and so would find it hard to maintain ordinances, and cut. of gratitude for past blessings, sent aid as fortune prospered them. I C O A third uniting force is war. John Ruskin, who argued against war, said that nevertheless it brought out the good. as well as the bad, in people. It brought out their he-roisrns, it too was B school of unseifishness.- It was said by a great man once that ”ii people did not hang together they would hang separately." War calls for unity. We have seen the need of this in the conflict that is closed in Europe. The ”big three"-England, the United States and Russia for a while kept to- gether, in spite of all that the Axis powers did to produce is cleavage. Had the smaller powers headed the advice given them. and united, their story would have been different. Experience is a very expensive teacher. Need, too, is a. cement that tends to cement people. There is it say- ing that "misery likes company." It binds folk together in more ways than one. Matthew Arnold, in one of his sonnets, tells how the poor are drawn together, "Some labouring men, whose work lay somewhere there, Passed opposite; she touched her girl, who hled Across, and begged, and came back satisfied, The rich she had let pass with irozed store." The tramp referred to would not think of asking aid from the rich. ' 0 But when we see the work of such an agency as the Red Cross, which leaps over barriers of race, creed and colour, we realize what ll. uniting cementing force it is. The call for help makes us forget little differences. We recall how tragedies appeal to people. The Halifax Explosion touched the hearts of the continent. Earth- quakes in other parts of the world, elicit sympathy. Europe now is in great need. Already food is on the way and we will reduce our ra- tions ao that the hungry may be fed. A Hebrew psslmist thought how fins a thing it was for people to feel their oneness, and he put it into the 133rd psalm-"I-low pleas- ant it is for brethren to dwell to- a e gcther in unity." It was like pleasant ointment enveloping it garment, or like the dew that gilstened upon the hills. These are some of the cements that keep society together. m.m Ghristmas Gifts SALE OF FANCY WORK and CHRISTMAS GIFTS at ,tho SACRED HEART HOME Wednesday & Thursday Dec. 3rd and 4th PLACE- 247 Queen St. (botwr-e HOURS- k P.
