It is from eatnrrh somewhere, and oetarrh is an- other name for uncleanness, Many men understand this, and make every effort to cure it, but it is bf- yond the reach of ordinary practice. No self-respecting man can ignore entarrh. It he has it in lny form he nukes constant efiort to be rid of it. There is sornething about the man- ner of life and the climate of Canada that seems to breed diseases of the mucous membrane. Medica.-l science ordinarily doesn’t try to cure catarrh; It “relieves” it; but Dr. Chase has been curing catarrh for over thirty years. and his name is blessed by thousands who have shaken gi the grsm of this insidious disease. THE GOVERNORSHIP- Witliin abrief space of time the federal government will, in the ordinary course, have at their dis- posal the governorship of this province. and it is a matter of considerable speculation who the successor of Governor Howlan shall be. In a. sense the interest is general through- out this city and the entire I.~l».n<.l, but it is in political circles that at- tention is most directed to this mst- ter, and especially within the limited ,fcircls of public men from whom . the coming governor will probably be selected. In the olden time, before the union with Canada our governors were sent to us from the llother Country with- out any choice on our part, and that system as compared with our present method of appointment had both its advantages and disadvantages. The change wrought by the union of the provinces opened up for the first time to public men of a. province the high- ,est position within the provincial boundaries, and awakened a new ambition in many minds. It is an honorable aspiration in any public man to qualify himself for and have influence enough with the powers that be to obtain an appointment as governor. But the oilice has lost something of its old-time distinction I by ceasing to be an imperial appoint- `ment, and being shorn of some pow- ers and pri rogatives which a.ttac".ed to ~,‘ it before the Dominion was called in- to existence. It may be said that the people in all the provinces have lost something. too, by the cliange. Our British ,Governors were of the nobility, or at least of the aristocracy of the old land, and brought with them I. grace of manner and dignity of bearing not always so readily found in s new country. Government House in those days in the various provinces was oducgtivo in all that pertained to life. Probably is none of the prov- inces has it been so much so since the union. But we have gained some- what in another way by having chief ple among whom they live and in them. A It has fa.’Ieu out that governorslxips are bestowed almost purely as rewards for political service, and with not very much regard to other requisites. Eminence in mercantile life, in the learned professions, as a captain of industry, or in philanthrophy, does not count in the race for a. governor- I ship. The one prime requisite, as ,things go, is that the aspirant shall have rendered considerable service to the party in power, either as a sup- Iporter in parliament, or by liberal contribution to the party funds, or by Fhaving carried the party standard in one or more hard-fought contests, or I by all of these political services com- bined. Agsiu, “young mencan wait,” and as the gubernatorial term isforou- ly Evo years the place is thought to be an especially fitting reward for public men who have passed the half cen- tury of life. Just now, on the eve of a. new ap- pointment when one asks, “Who will be our next Governor I ” the most frequent answer he will receive from the would-be wise ones is, "Hon Dunjs}'])avies.” Few will explain exactly why they' have formed this ? o inion but none the less they hold A . P 1 to it very tenaciously. and knowingly ‘ Say, “Y0u’ll .see-." Mr. Dfwres has i l '_ l 1 1 V CHARLOTTETOVVIY , JOHN T. IVICKENZIE. l.;-4 -F1 |= *-1 eW€000 -get o-o-e®m=@» BILOR, I- - - P. E. ISLAND I in 1887 and 1891. He had also unsuc-I the amenities and obs: rvances of sociil' magistrates who are men of the peo- closer touch and sympathy with enjoyed n long and successful career in business life and in earlier years enjoyed the support of the electorate as u. member ot' the provincial legis- lature and government, and in the term 1874-H represented King`s County in the Commons. ‘ Not a few of the Liberal politicians who somewhat confidently predict the appointment of Mr. Davies, aliirm that Commodore Welsh has the first claim to the place, on the ground of long and faithful party serv.ce. He sat in the local assembly from 1874 to l8T8,und was returned tothe Commons cessfully contested a. bye-election in I 1884 with _l)r.Jenkins, and in the general election of 1896 was again unsuccessful in the contest with Mr. Martin. Another name mentioned frequent- ly in C0l_1uection with the goiernor- ship is that of Dr Mclntyrr, ex M P. for Kings County. Dr McIntyre is a. much youngermun than either- of those before named in this article, his birth year dating no further back than 1540. And of course there are those who say he can wait. But so long ago as 1874 he was elected to . the Commons and has since- fought the Liberal battle in that constituency with varying success, but always as a strong and popular' exponent of his party. He was defeated- in 1878, elected in 1882 and 1587 but was defeated in lc9l and again by a. very few votes in 1896. His aspirations BYU ll8l.r\1l`Blly VOI`y Strfongly Sllppoflled by his co-religionists throughout the Island. In the last analysis whomsoever Sir Louis Davies names to the posi- tion will receive it. But Sir Louis, like any other minister in his position* will consult his supporters in the two houses, and no doubt the defeated candidates of his party who have some- thing to say in matters of appoint- ments. By political usage the Min- isters is open to- receive responsible advice from the Liberal Island mem- bers of the Commons, lllessrs Bell and McLellan. with Senator Yeo, and Messrs Welsh and McIntyre ex M.Ps. If the reader will imagine these six wise men in council-“two of the number being possible governors-'he will form some idea of the ditliculties of making a selection. The choice will not likely be unanimous, but it ought to be suiliciently easy for Sir Louis to obtain at last a. majority in favor of some one. Shall it be one of the three abcve named, or a_ dark horse? There are several of the latter in the back-ground, not ~yet fairly entered for the governorship stakes. C'l.ARKE’S KOLA CUMPUUMD CURB!
