Arctic Exploration PROPOSED SEARCH FOR OASES IN GREEN- | LAND—PREVIOUS EXPLORATIONS AND SEARCHES. A correspondent writes from Chris tiania under date of Feb. 13:—The Sweedish explorer, Dr. Osear Dickson, | who, together with King Oscar and the Russian, Mr. Sibiriakoff, fitted out the | celebreted Nordenskjold expedition | around North Siberia, has arrived here | from his home at Gothenburgh to lay | before the King the plan of a new Sweedish Artic expedition under the | direction of Professor Nordenskjold. | Nordenskjold has again adopted the idea—long ago given up by others that the so-called East Colony iu Gree land. where there was a large se in the Middle Ages, must be search for on the ecastren const, east of C Farewell, the south point of Greenland. The East Colony is saidio have em- braced 100 villages, thirteen parishes, two cloisters, and one diocese. of the fourteenth century, the connect = | ' ion with the mother country was inter ruptedyand the colonists were left to themselves, lacking everything, so they were unable te defend against the Esquimaux population, thé so-called “ Skrollinger,” w! 1379, reported to have fallen in the Northmen. The navigation Greenladd stopped, and gradually the colonists died from hunger and priva r with ov tious, or they succumbed in ther struggles with the Esquimaux, the de-| tails of which are unknown to us. During an expedition made in years 1828-31 the Danish nav al officer Girash believed to have proved that the East Colony should be searched tor pear Inlianchaab on the western coast But, us above mentioned, Nordensk jold is of a different opinion. To search for the old Norwgian colonies, traces of which may possibly be found Kast of Cape Farwell, is but a subordinate nim of thenew travelliog plan con- ceived by the great discoverer. N denskjold prineipally proposes to pene- trate thirty or forty miles into the inland ice fields of Greenland and there to search for eventual oases, the exist- ence of which is confirmed by several facts scientifically proved, and traces of which were discevered by the Ger- man Arctic expeditions. The eastern part of Greenland has a stronly marked Alpine character, and is still less known than the western’ part, which may be called a plateau of gla- ciers. The country is indescribaly wild and difficult to penetrate into, owing to the breaking up of the mountains into huge walls, the large extent of the glaciers, and the depth of the snow. An- other impediment to the exploration ef the country isthe softness of the soil during the season when the snow melts. The country, which is frozen and hard as a stone during the larg- er part of the year, can only in sum- mer be explored, and then with diffi- culiy. The soil is then quite soft, the lower parts of the country are changed into swamps and the slopes are inun- dated by the floods of the melted snow- dritts. The Celebrated discoverer, however, does not mean to be deterred by such difficulties, [t is said that Dr. Dickson will request the Swedish Legis- lature, through the Government, that a government vessel may be fitted out for the expedition which will start in May. An expedition already planned to the Siberian coast has been put off, as the restits of the Danish expepition, under Lieutenant Hovgaard (the Di- jmpha expedition), are waited for. lita fhe Great French Remedy, LeDuce’s Periodical Pills. — Dr. For ihe cure of Leucorrhea or White's FE xcessive of ainful Menstrnation, Green Sickness, Falling of the Womb, Catarrh of the Uterus or Vagnia, Hysteria, Pain in the Back, or Piles, or for the pucpose of in- vigorating and giving tone to the Gererative Organs, two pills should be taken twice daily, or in very en, febled conditions, one pill three times «day, To effect cures in chronic cases it will be neeessary to continue the use of the remedy for some months, trial will create snflicient confidence in the insure its being taken until a permanent cure is ef | Stark Kivxey Pap Co,, 31 King Street, Wes Toronte.
